4 • LAKE COUNTRY POST • MAY 30, 2015 GMTODAY.COM HEALTH All Hail the King and Queen OCONOMOWOC — Shorehaven residents voted on and announced their regal royalty to reign during National Nursing Home Week this month and all year long at special events. Queen Margaret Wheeler and King Tom Droegkamp were crowned last week. They promenaded on the red carpet and danced to "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." By Matt Masterson Enterprise Staff WAUKESHA — Safe Babies Healthy Families announced Thursday it has partnered with Thriving Waukesha County Alliance and plans to move forward with a focus on increasing its capacity and long-term sustainability. Rising demand for ser- vices and the complexity of cases has exceeded the local nonprofit's current resources. According to a release, the number of unmet referrals has dou- bled since last year and of the 60 referrals received so far, nine cases involved drug-affected newborns. Turning away any num- ber of at-risk, vulnerable babies, children and fami- lies is unacceptable and Safe Babies Healthy Fami- lies is dedicated to finding a solution, according to the release. "We've partnered with Thriving Waukesha County Alliance to explore innova- tive and creative strategies to ensure these critical community services are poised to meet the growing need," Safe Babies Healthy Families President & CEO Nancy Major said in a statement. "Community leaders from ProHealth Care, Waukesha County Department of Health & Human Services, and Unit- ed Way of Greater Milwau- kee & Waukesha County, along with several of our nonprofit partners, have committed to supporting these efforts." Major said the organiza- tion has been raising 60 percent of its budget through fundraising — which she believes is not a sustainable long-term solu- tion — for services that affect the lives of at-risk babies and children in the community. "As a community, we need to ensure these criti- cal services are provided and can serve the growing need," Ed Olson, co-chair of Thriving Waukesha County Alliance, said in a state- ment. "Thriving Wauke- sha's mission is to build long-ter m sustainability and optimal capacity in the nonprofit sector. In bring- ing key community stake- holders to the table, we have an opportunity to help organizations, like Safe Babies Healthy Families, using a 'collective impact' approach." The merged organization will offer a one-of-a-kind service model which is highly effective in healthy birth outcomes, child abuse and neglect prevention, and early childhood education. According to the release, this model ensures continu- um of care until each child is five years old through support, education and resources provided by a highly-specialized team of case managers. Success of the program is evidenced by healthy births absent of alcohol or drugs, and children being raised in safe and healthy homes with zero infant fatalities. Additionally, 85 percent of eligible five-year olds scored "on-track" for kindergarten, whereas fewer than 23 percent of those same children would have been on-track without the program's interven- tion.
