Located in Freedom California Sunnyside Produce www.lakesideorganic.com/local Lakeside Organic Gardens The Time of Growth In the summer of 2014, Lakeside Organic Gardens purchased nearly 200 acres of farmland in the Pajaro Valley in an effort to preserve fertile farmlands that were being targeted for the development of "big box stores." Owner Dick Peixoto, who is outspoken about the possible threat to our farmland, is committed to a three year transition to convert and certify the land for organic growing. "It's a "It's a good move for us as a company, and a good move for the (Pajaro) Valley to have that buffer to stop development from jumping out onto agricultural land," Peixoto said. "We'll keep it in farming. We have no interest in developing it." In addition to increasing the farmland acreage, Peixoto has plans to expand their operation. "We purchased property to build a new cooling and shipping facility, office buildings and warehouses in our hometown, Watsonville," he said. In addition to running Lakeside Organic Gardens, Peixoto and his daughter, Ashley, opened the California Grill of the Pajaro Valley Restaurant in 2012. Located at the Freedom Centre in Freedom, CA, the eatery has become very popular, serving freshly prepared organic vegeta- bles. What also makes the establishment unique is the fact that this is a rare situation in which the farmer opens the restaurant. "Besides, of course, all of our produce, we feature local fish, meats, specialty items and des- serts. In fact, we just started serving Mary's all-natural, free-range chicken, and that's been a big hit," said Alyssa Green, assistant manager at the California Grill. "In a big way, local agriculture is what we're about," said Green. "Our goal at the restaurant is to support local community by bringing healthy local items to the tables of our diners. We've built a small community of our own here." By popluar demand, the California Grill recently began a Happy Hour from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. "We showcase local wines and locally-sourced appetizers such as Lakeside Organic Gardens veggie dippers & Castroville artichokes," said owner Ashley Peixo- to.
