The hon ors will be presented during the Annual Meetings and Govern ment Con fer ence on Feb. 1617 in Indianapolis. Speakers at the Newsroom Seminar will include: • Tom French, a Pulitzer Prizewinning reporter. • John Krull, director of the Franklin College Pulliam School of Journalism and the Franklin College Statehouse Bureau. • Lesley Stedman Weid en bener, Franklin College Statehouse Bureau assistant bureau chief. • John Strauss, journalism instructor at Ball State University. • Kristy Deer of the Daily Reporter (Green field) and John Russell of The Indian- apolis Star, winners of the See Seminar, Page 2 State officials support teeth for access laws Legislation would allow judge to levy civil penalty Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller has adopted government transparency legislation supported by the Hoosier State Press Association as part of his agenda for the 2012 General Assembly. The proposal would nominations is Friday, Nov. 18. Send your nominee's name, biographical information, address and phone number, along with a letter explaining why you believe the nominee should receive a Sunshine or Distinguished Service award, to Steve Key, HSPA executive director and general counsel, at skey@hspa.com or 41 E. Washington St., Suite 301, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Written rationales should not exceed 500 words. Include any supporting documentation or evidence supporting your nomination. The Sunshine Award is pre sented to an individual, group or organization that has dem onstrated outstanding efforts to protect and enhance the concepts of open government in Indiana. While not limited to public officials, HSPA hopes to recog nize worthy elected officials or public employees through this award. The Distinguished Service See Nominate, Page 2 allow judges to levy civil penalties against public officials who deliberately violate state access laws and give more authority to the Indiana public access counselor. The people's business must be transacted in an open way or the public will lose trust in govern ment, Zoeller said. "Most government offi cials already comply with the existing law, but there are an unfortunate few who huddle behind closed doors or refuse to release public records, and there has been little ability until now to penalize such actions," he said. Beverly Gard, RGreenfield, has committed to filing the proposal in the Greg Zoeller See Access, Page 3 Beverly Gard About the legislation Government transparency legislation supported by HSPA and the Indiana attorney general has three goals: • Allow a judge to levy a civil penalty against an official or management employee in a government unit for deliberate viola- tions of access laws. • Allow Hoosiers to request email notice of public meetings. The bill would give a government unit the option of posting meeting notices on its website. • Allow the Indiana public access counselor to exam- ine the originals of redact- ed documents to give an opinion as to whether the redaction was allowable under the Access to Public Records Act. The Fort Wayne News- Sentinel is coming to publicaccess cable TV in the weekly form of some thing called the "Fort Report." What's In print. Online. that, exactly – and why is a 178yearold newspaper venturing into such uncharted electronic waters? It's a long story, but a relatively obvious one if you've been paying attention. The News-Sentinel's had a partnership with WANETV for some time. We promote each other's content and some of the newspaper's reporters and editors – myself included – appear on the air from time to time. Each organization benefits On TV? That's right, the Fort Wayne News- Sentinel is pro- ducing a weekly cable show, the "Fort Report." Check it out at news-sentinel. com; search under "Fort Report."
