Once in a while, though, a show's idea is so good, or the tal- ent behind it so great, that it gets to skip the pilot stage entirely and get itself an order to series. "Telenovela" fits firmly into that category. The upcoming NBC comedy stars Eva Longoria ("The Young and the Restless," "Des- perate Housewives") as Ana Ma- ria, the star of Latin America's fa- vorite telenovela, whose life off screen is even more complex and dramatic than the one she lives on the screen. The veteran ac- tress will also serve as an execu- tive producer. Despite only being formally announced a month ago, "Tele- novela" has already been busy filling up its cast. Amaury Nolas- co ("Prison Break") has signed on as the show's villain. Diana- Maria Riva ("The Bridge") has been cast as Maria's best friend, while Jencarlos Canela ("Hunted By Night," 2010) will play a tele- novela heartthrob. Skipping the pilot stage com- pletely is a huge vote of confi- dence for "Telenovela." Watch for this Eva Longoria-headlined comedy next season on NBC. Looking at the past: Who are we? Where do we come from? Those are some deep ques- tions, ones that religions and philosophers have sought the answers to for millennia. That is, if you take the broad-brushed approach with them. TLC's "Who Do You Think You Are?" asks the questions much more narrowly. Back for a new season pre- miering Tuesday, Feb. 24, "Who Do You Think You Are?" has a new batch of celebrities, includ- ing Julie Chen ("The Talk," "Big Brother"), Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace") and Bill Paxton ("Big Love"), standing at the ready to learn about their origins. Each episode of "Who Do You Think You Are?" follows a different ce- lebrity tracing his or her family tree back to its roots. Genealogy doesn't exactly sound like it would make for must-watch tele- vision, but the surprises that are uncovered by the stars as they dig through the past are nearly always eyebrow-raising. "Who Do You Think You Are?" began its life as an NBC show based on the BBC series of the same name. It ran for three sea- sons on the peacock network, featuring such stars as Lisa Kud- row ("Friends"), Steve Buscemi ("The Big Lebowski," 1998) and Reba McEntire ("Reba"), before being picked up by TLC. The question of where we come from doesn't have to be such a deep or scary one.
