Williams Now, let's start by saying I know that reading about tires is not high on your list of excit- ing activities. You know about tires. They're those round and black things that always seem to be going fl at while you are on your way to Mickey World or late for a dental appoint- ment. They give trouble when you least need it and are always wearing out just as a payment is due on Junior's braces or the water heater has sprung a leak. But, truthfully, there are few things that can be more dangerous than a poor quality, badly maintained set of tires. Tires do far more for you than just keep those shiny rims from getting scratched. Well made tires will make a world of difference in how your car or truck rides, handles, stops and steers. Each tire has a small area about the size of your palm that actually is in contact with the road, and that is all that is controlling your car as you hurtle down. Con- dition is crucial here. Most car tires are molded to 10/32" of an inch in tread depth, and that tread is necessary to give traction in rain, mud and snow. Let your tires get worn to less than 4/32" of an inch tread depth, and you can forget go- ing anywhere when it snows, and may end up hydroplaning (sliding uncontrollably) on rain slickened roads. Don't even think about driving them until they get to the "legal" 2/32" minimum. Tire pressures are next in line for attention. Proper pressure settings are found on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, glove box or owner's manual. Set pressures when cold, or add approximately three to four pounds over the listed amount if tires are hot to compensate for heat expansion. Readjust pressures when temperatures drop. Get a good tire gauge. Buy quality tires, making sure they are the correct size, load and speed rating for your car or truck (see that sticker again) to maintain minimum safe stan- dards for your model. Poorly designed, shoddily made tires will make your driving experi- ence miserable with a noisy and rough ride. Get an alignment done when tires are new, then rotate them every fi ve thou- sand to seventy-fi ve hundred miles to maintain even wear. Realign at the fi rst signs of ir- regular wear. Save receipts in case of warranty issues. Follow these suggestions and may your motoring be merrier! Remember, keep it between the lines and shiny side up.
