I fi shed with a friend who had a "V" hull alumi- num boat. The trolling motor was small and the outboard was even smaller. He owned a small cabin on the lake so our fi shing always started from the same loca- tion. Because of the limited horsepower we rarely traveled very far away. We always fi shed in the same places and seldom went home empty handed. It seems as I got older and better equipped I traveled farther and farther up and down the lake to fi nd those illusive bass, only to have pretty much the same results. You see now I spend more of my time moving than I do fi shing and while I can see what's below now with a fi sh fi nder, I once knew what was below by experience. I had fi shed Straight Creek Hollow so many times, under so many situa- tions, that I knew where the bass were probably hiding. I was simply forced to bloom where I was planted. Oh there were times that I wished I were up in the river or down beside the bridge; but I was forced to learn to succeed where I was at the time. I think about this same scenario when I deer hunt. I know that I will be better off if I will just come to know the 50 acres I've been given instead of trying to hunt 400 acres. I can remember taking a picture of a young pine tree. It was growing from the middle of a huge rock and it was thriv- ing. What it couldn't go around, above, or under, it just went through. I knew that it was not supposed to grow there but it didn't. I knew that it was out of place but it didn't. I could have explained to it every reason why it would never become a fruit- ful tree but the only thing that would have been unfruitful were my words. Because, you see, it bloomed where it was planted. Don't let anyone tell you that you will never succeed where you are. Take God with you and what you can't go around, above, or under, He will take you through. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is joining other organizations in supporting the proposed management areas unveiled by the U.S. Forest Service for the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests, located in western North Carolina. The U.S. Forest Service is revising its Land Management Plan for Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests, which will guide management activities for the next 10 to 15 years. As part of that process, the Forest Service has established two management areas, or zones, that encompass approximately 700,000 acres where activities, such as wildlife management, sustainable timber harvests, controlled burns or other measures, can be used to create good habitat for a diversity of wildlife species. Young forests and brushy areas are in short supply on the national forests and, as a result, many species that need these areas to breed or to obtain food are in decline. These young forest areas are listed as a priority habitat in the Commission's Wildlife Action Plan. The proposed management areas provide options to create young forests as well as provide for other types of habitat needed for wildlife. "The proposed management areas are very favorable for our precious wildlife resources," said Gordon Warburton, ecoregion supervisor for the Commission. "We need active habitat management to ensure the survival of many species and this includes carefully monitored and scientifi cally based timber and forestry practices to restore these critical and limiting habitat types." Some groups have concerns about the proposed management areas, believing that they promote industrial logging and extensive new building of roads, as well as ignore important areas such as trails and recreation areas. "This is simply not the case," said Ryan Jacobs, forest wildlife manager with the Commission. "The Forest Service is mandated to use scientifi cally based forestry when restoring forests or wildlife habitat and they have to consider special-use areas such as trails." For nearly a century, the USFS has been managing national forests, restoring once cut-over lands with the goal of improving the health, diversity and productivity of forest ecosystems — a goal that Warburton says the USFS has exceeded. "This is an American conservation success story," Warburton said. "The Forest Service is committed to conserving our forests in a fi scally and ecologically sustainable manner." Public comments can be emailed to ncplanrevision@fs.fed.us, until Dec. 13.
