Dear readers, October was National Domestic Violence Aware- ness Month. The Women's Center in Waukesha offers shelter and safety as well as support programs for south- eastern Wisconsin women and their children in crisis. This year, I wanted to find a way to help make a differ- ence. After forming a dedi- cated volunteer committee, the Threads of Comfort pro- ject was launched. This team is coordinating a new, one-time component added to the annual Women's Cen- ter Fashion show to be held Nov. 21, 2014, at the Country Springs Hotel in Pewaukee. For more information on the evening fashion show, dinner, silent auction, and raffle, The Women's Center website truly merits a click: w w w. t w c w a u k e s h a . o r g . Gather a group of friends and purchase tickets to this stellar event and support courageous women. The Threads of Comfort committee has been collect- ing antique and vintage tex- tiles. These items will be for sale before the Fashion Show in the Grand Salon Foyer of the hotel from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Nov. 21. No admission ticket is required for textile purchase in the foyer. Most examples are one-of- a-kind vintage or antique. Large items will be sold individually while others will be bundled together. A sampling of collected items includes: Over 50 quilts, com- forters and bed coverings Stacks of embroidery- edged pillow cases Sleigh motif Christmas wall hanging Vintage garments Sewing tools & acces- sories Framed needlework Sewing boxes/cabinets Toy sewing machines Tablecloths, fabric and much more We are still accepting donated items — especially any artisan-designer baby comforters — through Nov. 15 at the below locations: Waukesha Antique Mall, 1427 E. Racine Ave., Waukesha Sugar Creek Antiques, 17900 W. National Ave., New Berlin All proceeds directly sup- port The Women's Center. (Please specify if you would like a tax receipt sent to you.) There is always a way to help make a difference. APPRAISALS Donated quilt The Great Depression was raging in 1929 and D.F. Dun- can started manufacturing an inexpensive yo-yo toy that people loved. It was a time when thrift was the daily word and this new yo- yo quilt pattern became pop- ular. Women cut the tiniest of fabric scraps into circle shapes. They didn't have the term yet, but they were up- cycling leftover cloth. With a handful of fabric circles in their apron pocket, they would edge-stitch while "sit- ting for a spell." It takes about 600 yo-yos to make a full-size bed coverlet. This beauty is the largest one that I have ever seen with 4,032. It would look stunning hang- ing from a quilt rack in your bedroom. With minor character flaws, it appraises out at $350. Velvet touch of Christmas A 22-inch-by-38-inch velvet wall hanging depicts harmo- ny of movement. This Rus- sian Troika is pulled by three horses. The center horse wears a collar and shaft bow while the side horses wear a breast collar harness. This type of har- ness driving combination was initially used for fast delivery of mail or a single passenger and later for full- speed racing. Can you hear the sleigh bells and howling dogs? Hanging over a Christ- mas hearth this printed tex- tile could become your fami- ly heirloom. Value is $150. Have an item for appraisal? Tell us about it and it could be selected for a future column. Mail entries to Waukesha Antique Shop, 1427 E. Racine Ave., Unit E-2, Waukesha, WI 53186. Send sharp, well-lit photos of front, back and underside of your item, and measure- ments are important. List any known history or even hearsay, length of owner- ship and all markings, even partial ones. Include your name, address and phone number. No photos can be returned and no purchase of antiques will occur.
