By Linda Powell Resource Specialist, ISDA The late summer days approach and corn fields are beginning to ripen which means it is also time to start watching for black layer and prepare to do Guided Stalk Sampling for OFN. For farmers en- rolled in OFN, your local SWCD, ISDA and NRCS (ICP) staff will be contacting you to ask for your har vesting timeline on these fields. OFN is a program that is free to farm- ers that tracks and analyzes nitrogen (N) use efficiency in corn. Producers who participate provide information about their corn cultivation practices and field locations. This information is then used set up aerial flights to provide yield maps which are then used to choose points in the field from which stalk samples are taken at or after black layer and before har vest. The samples are sent to a lab and analyzed for the N remaining in the stalk and compared to Purdue recommendations for N con- centrations of low, optimum and high. This can give producers some real time data about how their soils and crops are using the N provided. ICP staff works along with the Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Association using protocols and applica- tion rate recommendations from Purdue to provide this program free of charge to participants. Most operators find the information ver y useful and well worth the small amount of time they invest in the program. Field and cultivation information is anonymous and privacy is maintained. Be aware that we are preparing for this final step in the process. We will be contacting you to check on your field's progress and to let you know that our staff will be out there taking samples.
