Several bags of trash and recyclables were gathered and the total weight of waste taken off the streets was about 100 pounds! It just goes to show that these little cub scouts can achieve big successes. A national litter study done by Keep America Beautiful in 2009 found that people under 30 are much more likely to intentionally litter than people who are older. The study also found that individuals are more prone to litter into an environment that is already littered however, a clean environment encourages proper waste disposal. The Scouts are taught early on about the impor- tance of community service. These types of activities foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for their community that can turn into solid values as they grow. In the case of waste reduction, these scouts get to see first-hand how cleaning an environment helps it stay cleaner longer. Community service also builds com- radery and in the form of a litter sweep, it is fun! The Uptown Shelby Association is collabo- rating with local chefs, farmers and business owners to host a farm- to-table dinner on the square in Shelby's Historic Uptown Dis- trict. The dinner, called Seeds to Silverware, will be held on the evening of September 27th, with long beautiful tables stretching down the length of Wash- ington Street between Warren and Marion. The evening will begin with wine and NC craft beers, served alongside hors d'oeuvres made from ingredients collected from local farmers. After that, a four course dinner highlight- ing each of the chef's skills and local ingredients will be served by volunteers. Throughout the evening, the guests will be entertained by live musicians from Cleveland County. Pro- ceeds from the dinner will benefi t the Uptown Shelby Association and their effort to grow small businesses in the Historic District. The menu for the evening highlights many of the wonderful ingredients that are currently at the peak of freshness in Western North Carolina. Tickets are currently on sale for $55. The Uptown Shelby Association operates the Main Street program in Shelby, N.C. It was one of the fi rst fi ve Main Street Associations in North Carolina and part of the pilot program launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1980.
