By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — After the dust settled from a long election night, incumbent David A. Clarke Jr. emerged as the victor early Wednesday in the heated Milwaukee County sheriff's Democratic primary race. Clarke, who is expected to assume his fourth term as sheriff, narrowly edged out Democratic challenger Chris Moews. As election results came trickling in Tuesday night, Clarke maintained a slight, but steady, lead over Moews. Clarke, who maintained relative obscuri- ty throughout the night of the election, addressed his crowd of supporters at the Blue Ribbon Pub just before midnight Wednesday morning. "They threw the kitchen sink at us, but we're still standing," Clarke said in his speech to supporters. The outspoken sheriff took jabs at politi- cal interest groups — some from outside the Milwaukee area — that infused money into campaign ads that criticized Clarke's poli- cies as sheriff. "Elections are about voters; they're about people," Clarke said as he addressed his supporters. "They're not about special interests." According to estimates, more than $600,000 in outside spending went toward attack ads against Clarke. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's political action committee and the Madison-based Greater Wisconsin Committee were among the groups that purchased the ads. Moews, who was at his campaign party throughout the night, formally addressed his crowd of supporters at The Hamilton on Milwaukee's east side minutes before Clarke gave his talk. Late Tuesday, Moews said he was not ready to concede. "It's been a long night, and it's going to be longer," said Moews, a Milwaukee police lieutenant. "We're not ready to concede."
