Oklahoma's Trusted Spanish News Source. TULSA, Oklahoma - It has been more than a month since Tulsa's Young Profes- sionals showcased the po- tential for redevelopment in southern downtown Tul- sa by bringing thousands of bicyclists and pedestrians to the area as part of the our fourth-annual commu- nity redevelopment event, Street CReD. Weeks later, the energy this event shows no signs of quitting. Street CReD: Urban Core was based on the idea that Tulsa needs a fully-vibrant urban core to survive — not just the poc- kets of vibrancy we see with the Brady Arts, Blue Dome and other downtown dis- tricts. To that end, we set out to promote walkable deve- lopment in one of the few corners of downtown still dominated by surface par- king — an area with vast expanses of cement that de- tract from the character and quality of our downtown and add nothing to our tax base. Street CReD featured an 18-block activity route in southern downtown with cycling and walking acti- vities and "activity stops" hosted by numerous part- nering nonprofit organiza- tions. In the end, we esti- mated that at least 2,500 people came out to enjoy downtown the way it was meant to be enjoyed — on foot. Now, we're keeping that spirit alive through our Street CReD Design Com- petition, where local archi- tecture professionals and enthusiasts have envisioned pedestrian-friendly ways to redevelop a surface parking lot at the southeast corner of 10th and Boston. Tulsans can vote online for their favorite renderings at bit.ly/TYProsDesign. e idea is that people like walking in urban co- res with storefront shops, parks and visually-interes- ting development. It sounds too simple, but if people have something to look at and activities along the way, walking is fun. Major cities across the country have been redevelo- ping their urban cores into centers of foot activity for years, encouraging develo- pers to build on the sites of historic buildings that were demolished for parking du- ring a misguided age of "ur- ban renewal" in the 1970 and 80s. e reason: Walkable ur- ban cores are vibrant urban cores. ey are centers of ac- tivities, recreation, business and culture. ey stimulate the tax base. ey add to the quality of life of a city and encourage tourism. Cities have discovered that they cannot survive without walkability — and by adding public transpor- tation and parking structu- res, they have easily been able to meet parking needs of their residents. Of course, while much of downtown Tulsa is amid a revitalization of its own, southern downtown has largely been left out. rough our Design Competition, we're showing Tulsans concrete examples of the kind of pedestrian- focus redevelopment nee- ded in southern downtown and the other areas of our urban core that have not yet been redeveloped. Five "teams" of archi- tects have created beautiful examples of urban design, ranging from mixed-use fa- cilities incorporating gree- nery – including one with a landscaped roof — to a food truck park and multi-sport complex. e designs were displa- yed at Street CReD, where attendees could vote for their favorite. Now, everyo- ne can see the entries and vote online. While there is no gua- rantee that the winning de- sign will come to fruition, that's not the point. e point is to show the city — and developers — examples of great ways to redesign a downtown surface parking lot, create vibrancy and move Tulsa forward. I encourage you to show your support for walkabili- ty by voting. As downtown continues making strides, we need to make sure our know what we want to see there. Your voice is more im- portant than ever. ISAAC ROCHA NOTICIAS.NACIONAL@COXINET.NET T-2 EL NACIONAL DE TULSA VIERNES 20 DE JUNIO, 2014 • www.noticiasoklahoma.com TULSA
