By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE – While it is easy to conjure up images of heroin-addicted people in poverty-stricken, urban environments, star- tling statistics continue to reveal the epidem- ic knows no geographic boundaries. In recent years, there have been wide- spread reports of heroin use and fatal over- dosing – not just outside Milwaukee's munic- ipal borders, but outside the confines of Milwaukee County as well. A rising number of youths, for instance, have been dabbling in heroin use in Ozaukee, Racine, Washington and Waukesha counties. While a number of possible remedies have been discussed – including stricter laws and stiffer regulations on what can and cannot be dispensed at hospitals – collaboration also has been cited as a way to stem the tide of this epidemic. A number of Milwaukee County leaders – including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee Common Council President Michael Murphy – held a regional sympo- sium, "Heroin: Not on our Watch – Protecting Our Communities," at Marquette University recently. A cross-section of people – including elect- ed officials, grass-roots organizers, health care workers and law enforcement personnel – attended the daylong event from five coun- ties. There was a variety of speakers who shared personal and anecdotal struggles of heroin addiction. While a number of meetings have been cropping up this year on heroin use, officials in a number of disciplines assert the majori- ty of the population is still unaware of how startling the statistics have been in recent years.
