By DWAYNE BUTLER Post Editor MILWAUKEE – A new marketing plan for the county-owned parcels left in Milwaukee's Park East area was unveiled Tuesday. The land was left vacant after the Park East Freeway was demolished in 1999. James T. Barry III, a former Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin board chairman and president of Cassidy Turley Barry real estate brokerage, was one of the driving forces behind the marketing effort. In a statement, he said that "the creation of a website and marketing plan for this site is a much needed effort that will bring trans- parency to the process and tools for brokers and developers to use in showcasing the property." The campaign features a website, www.parkeastmke.com, signs and other marketing materials. It is funded by the county, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. and the city of Milwaukee. According to a release, city and county economic development staff have been working with the Commercial Association of Realtors, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and development experts for several months on the new pro- gram to sell the remaining land parcels in the Park East area. The website will provide a central loca- tion for developers and business operators to find information about the sites. The approx- imately 10 acres is located west of the Milwaukee River. "For the three years I've been in office, we've been working with city leaders to streamline the Park East land sale process, so far our combined efforts have produced successful developments and deals. This new program is a big next step," Abele said in a county news release. "Developing this land will continue to create much needed jobs and tax dollars." Abele and Barrett's offices partnered in a failed attempt to draw the Kohl's Corp. to the county-owned 16-acre strip in 2012. Years earlier, there was a plan to put the Harley- Davidson Museum in the Park East corridor, but the motorcycle manufacturer opted for a site in the Menomonee Valley. Today, development is taking place to the east of the Milwaukee River, Barrett said in a Tuesday news conference. He referred to the $21 million first phase of the Avenir development, which includes 104 apart- ments and 7,000 square fee of commercial space, a parking structure and a second development phase. The developments taking place west of the river include the Aloft, an apartment and condo high-rise, a new Associated Bank branch and the ongoing development of the former Pabst brewery. "In this immediate neighborhood, luxury homes, corporate headquarters and other businesses have been built. Now, we want to encourage the next wave of development that will create jobs and economic activity," Barrett said. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • June 13, 2014 volume 20, issue number 24 The Milwaukee County Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414.744.6370 General FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: Daryl Skaradzinski: General Manager - ext. 13 dskaradzinski@conleynet.com For editiorial inquires: Dwayne Butler: Editor - 262-513-2626 dbutler@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee County Post 3397 S. Health Tip of the Week Registered Pharmacist Bob Stresing and the Serv-U Team 238335178 Vitamin D Deficiency & Fibromyalgia People with fibromyalgia who also have low blood levels of vitamin D may receive some benefit from supplementation. In a recent study of women with fibromyalgia who were deficient in vitamin D, researchers gave some of the women vitamin D supplements for 25 weeks and then tracked them for another 24 weeks. The women who received the supplements reported less morning fatigue and pain than those who didn't take the vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to chronic pain in previous studies. Consult with your doctor before starting supplements.
