By Ed Cahill Pike County School Board President Jerry Grubb ques- tioned why the corporation has spent more than $4,300 to place advertisements in several area newspapers to fill the vacant boys' and girls' head coach positions at Pike Central High School during its regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 12. "I was going through the claims and there are six claims that are listed as ad- vertisement for basketball coaches, and the total I got was $4,300," Grubb said. "Did we spend $4,300 to ad- vertise for basketball coach- es? " "Yes," replied Pike Coun- ty School Superintendent Suzanne Blake. "Why? " Grubb asked. "Because we wanted to make sure we had a com- prehensive sweep of post- ing, and not just in-house," Blake answered. "That cov- ers both girls' basketball and boys' basketball." "To me, that's a little ex- pensive for advertising," Grubb said. Blake, asked by board Vice-President Chris McK- inney what newspapers the ads had been placed in, list- ed The Press-Dispatch, the Washington Times-Herald, the Dubois County Herald, the Evansville Courier & Press, the Princeton Daily Clarion, and the Vincennes Sun-Commercial. According to informa- tion provided by Pike Coun- ty School Corporation Trea- surer Krista Halbrader, the school corporation spent $208.80 for four ad inser- tions in The Press-Dispatch, $1,372.94 for 20 ad inser- tions in the Washington Times-Herald, $ 886 for 16 ad insertions in the Dubois County Herald, $449.82 for eight ad insertions in the Evansville Courier & Press, $ 929.88 for 27 ad insertions in the Princeton Daily Clar- ion, and $494.40 for 22 ad insertions in the Vincennes Sun-Commercial, for a total of $4,309.06. A motion to approve pay- ment of the school corpo- ration's claims – including those for the newspaper ad- vertisements – passed by a 4-1 vote, with Grubb casting the lone no vote. In other action, the school board unanimous- ly approved a request from Blake to advertise for a tax anticipation warrant in the amount of $ 3.5 million. "Our current one will be due in June 2014," Blake explained. "The new one would be for the remaining six months of 2014. I'm re- questing $1.8 million bor- rowed against the Trans- portation Fund, $1.6 million against the Capital Projects Fund and $100,000 against the Bus Replacement Fund." Blake noted that the school corporation's current tax anticipation warrant was for a total of $ 3.7 million. "So this would be a reduc- tion in the loan amount," Blake said. "The new loan amount would be $200,000 less." The school board also ap- proved Blake's request to gather additional informa- tion on the school referen- dum process. "In particular, one of the key elements is you need to seek legal and financial representation to move for- ward, and I'm requesting your permission to pursue meetings with Jane Hern- don, of Ice Miller, for legal counsel and Belvia Gray, of Umbaugh and Associates, for financial review." The motion by McKinney, seconded by board member Nathan Harker, to approve the request passed by a 4-1 vote, with Grubb again cast- ing the lone no vote. "We'd like to point out that any information gath- ered will come back," Blake said. "It will be made public. We will have some opportu- nity to review the findings as well as go forward, and there will be a point this summer where the board has to make a decision as to whether or not they're going to official- ly adopt a resolution to pur- sue the referendum." Blake also updated the school board on the fund balances, which, as of April 30, were: General Fund – negative $2,959,925; Debt Service – $173,235; Capital Projects Fund – $1,040,776; Transportation Fund – $1,691,220; and Bus Re- placement Fund – $202,744. In other business, the school board approved a re- quest by Stephanie Burkem- per of the Pike County Soil and Water Conservation Dis- trict to begin designing a "rain garden" to be located at Pike Central High School. According to Burkem- per, the design phase of the project would be covered by a $1,500 Clean Water Indi- ana grant. "And then, after that, I have about $10,000 to $15,000 to spend on the ac- tual construction of the gar- den," Burkemper told the board. The rain garden would be placed near the tennis courts, between the drive toward the front office and the school building, Blake noted. Burkemper said that the rain garden would be in- stalled and maintained at no expense to the school corpo- ration. "We would look forward to using it for education- al purposes after it's estab- lished and also during con- struction," Burkemper said. "The horticultural class- es can benefit from it. The environmental classes can benefit from it. Even down to the business classes, as far as managing the expens- es of it." Burkemper noted that the area selected for the rain garden was a low-lying area. "What this rain garden will do is it'll take that run- off water from the drives and everywhere else and it will filter it, so it's clean- er when it goes back into the ground," Burkemper said. "Currently, there is no rain garden in Pike Coun- ty, and this would be one of the biggest in surrounding counties, too. So we'd like to showcase it with some awards when we're done, School board discusses coach advertising, rain garden Pike County starts paving the Pike County Highway Department started paving recently on the Cato-algiers road. they are paving 1.2 miles of it from Highway 56 north. they had also paved Cr550e to the old ben Scout reservation.
