By Kirsten Klahn Special to The Freeman HARTLAND – Your first garden doesn't need to be an overwhelming experience. In fact, follow a few sim- ple tips, and it may seem downright easy. Start by picking a location. But not just any location, said Ted Haasch, a master gardener and member of the Daylily Society of SouthEast Wiscon- sin, an organization that promotes and encourages the cultivation, study, development and improve- ment of day lilies. "Look for a nice, sunny spot," he said. "You're going to want a mini- mum of six hours of sunlight for whatever you decide to grow." And, be weary of the weather. Spring brings a lot of rain – don't work with wet soil because it begins to feel like concrete, Haasch said. Fight the urge and only work with soil when it's dry. Beginners should also consider using container gardens, said Lynn Laufenberg, the Milwaukee district director of the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation, which includes Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwau- kee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha counties. "If you put the containers up close to the house, your garden becomes more accessible," Laufenberg said. "So place them near your patio or around your umbrella table. Then your plants are near you and it'll be easier to remember to water them." While using containers is great for those new to gardening, it's also a viable option for people who may be short on space, Haasch said. "Most people who live in the city in apartments or condos can have a nice garden in containers," Haasch said. "If you use containers, make sure to water them a lot because they dry out more. And, once a plant dries out, it can be hard to get it back." When planning a garden, figure out how big the plants will be once fully grown, and space them out accordingly, said Mathew Jagodzins- ki, an employee at Hartland-based Sandy Bottom Nature Center, 4607 Vettelson Road.
