A leader shows others what it takes to win and encour- ages them to do better. A leader also rallies the team as its biggest cheer- leader, and the leader takes charge at the end when the competition is over. Senior Ceanna Soper is that person for the Arrow- head High School girls track and field team. "You are going to watch that girl after running a (personal record) on a cool night right after spring break, then now she's over there showing the girls how to take down the tent," Arrowhead interim coach Curt Kaczor said. "She's such a leader. She does all those little things. Right after she takes this tent down, you will see her and hear her for the cool down." And like clockwork, as soon as the tent was put away it was Soper's voice you heard gathering the varsity and junior varsity teams into their cooldown on the track. Her leadership helped the Warhawks edge Muk- wonago to win the Red Division title at the Classic 8 Conference Relays at Waukesha North. Arrow- head scored 64 points, while Mukwonago had 62. Waukesha West won the Blue Division with 58 points, while Waukesha South was right behind with 54. Soper was by far the best hurdler at the meet. She posted the top time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.76), winning by 0.91 of a sec- ond. Her margin of victory in the 300 was even greater, as her time of 45.85 was 1.6 seconds faster than the sec- ond runner. Being a relay meet, Soper said she is very competi- tive but winning individu- ally wasn't the goal. How- ever, having the fastest times in both events helped Arrowhead win both relays. "We were just doing it for each other," Soper said about herself and her hur- dle teammates. "No one is out there running the race alone. You've got two girls counting on you. If you are tired, it doesn't matter. You've got to finish it for each other. I don't get a medal winning individual- ly." Soper enjoyed the change of pace the relay meet has to offer. "I'll run in whatever they put me in," she said. "This is just a different animal. The race is hard, but you are not doing it for you. You are doing it for the girls you are training with day in and day out." This was the last relay meet Arrowhead was in this season. Soper is trying to make it to state for the first time. She's been more of a 100 hurdles specialist, but her 300 hurdles is com- ing along quite nicely. Soper was also part of Arrowhead's winning 4x400 relay team. "When it comes to the end of the year, Soper will do a lot of things for us and she's going to be really competitive," Kuczor said. "We've got a tough section- al with some great hur- dlers, so we are really going to look at what we can do with her so she can be that strong leader for us and be really successful." Arrowhead also won the 4x800, the 1,600 sprint med- ley, the distance medley and split the pole vault with Mukwonago for a total of six event victories. Mukwonago won seven events. West won the Blue Divi- sion despite not having three state qualifiers in the lineup. Sophomores Emma Langer and Jay Tolefree and junior Teghan Norman did not compete due to injuries. The Wolverines won six of the 15 events. "We had lots of good per- formances and a lot of our freshmen made major jumps with career bests," West coach Chris Ramsey said. "I'm very happy with the whole team. It was a good night. Other kids had to step up, so I was real happy with what was going on." WAUKESHA – The Muk- wonago High School boys track and field team won the Classic 8 Conference Relays at Waukesha West last month. The Indians scored 58 points, narrowly outdis- tancing second-place Arrowhead by two points. The Indians won the 4x1,600, and Jake Krueger posted the top discus per- formance with a distance of 151 feet. "It certainly wasn't our best day," Arrowhead coach Chris Herriot said. "Considering how every- thing went for us through- out the course of the meet, we feel very good about finishing second. "We were very pleased with how the guys per- formed today despite the bad weather," said Muskego coach Owen Jar- rett, whose team placed third in the large-school division with 36 points. – Jeff Hagenau, Freeman Correspondent Arrowhead boys second in Classic 8 Relays WAUKESHA – The Arrow- head High School girls track and field team won five events in winning the Classic 8 Con- ference Indoor Champi- onships at Waukesha South.
