By Andy Heuring This year's District 1 County Council race for the Republican nomination pits local businessman and one-term incumbent Ran- dy Harris against IPL Op- erator Kurt Vaughn. Voters will decide the race on Tues- day, May 6, in the primary. So far, there is no Demo- crat opponent in the gener- al election. Kurt VAugHn Kurt Vaughn lives in Pe- tersburg with his wife, Jen- ny. They have two children, Lincoln and Lauren. He is president of the Pike Coun- ty Basketball Club and at- tends the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A 1993 graduate of Pike Central High School, Vaughn works as an oper- ator at IPL and is a mem- ber of the Operating Engi- neers 181. He served for two years on the Petersburg Park and Recreation Board. "My running for office had nothing to do with the incumbent. I believe sit- ting home watching the news and I-69 being built, Pike County wasn't being aggressive enough with it. Growing up on the south side of Pike County, I think Pike County has more to of- fer than Petersburg. And I think we need to get that out to people," said Vaughn about why he is running for county council. He added, "My opponent has had 16 years, most when he was mayor. I want my chance now with a dif- ferent look on the issues." Vaughn said of his goals, "I want to aggressively sup- port economic growth and how that pertains to the sewer line. "I want to make existing spending more effective for the whole county. I want to use a common sense ap- proach to all the issues and get them resolved in a time- ly manner." Vaughn said people should vote for him be- cause, "I have no hidden agendas, no conflicts of in- terest. Having no conflicts of interest, the way I vote will be the way I think." He added, "I will work hard for the taxpayers to make Pike County a better place for my kids and every- one who lives here." rAndy HArris Randy Harris, of Peters- burg, lives with his wife, Denise, and two daugh- ters, Jayla and Jenna. They own and operate Harris Re- al Estate. He is a graduate of Reitz High School and the Uni- versity of Southern Indiana. He also was a graduate as- sistant at Central Missouri State. Harris is a member of the Petersburg Kiwanis, attends the Monroe City Church of God, is a member of various real estate asso- ciations and a licensed real estate broker. "When I moved here in 1988 to do news for WF- PC, it created a communi- ty involvement in me. I got to know people and organi- zations. I hadn't planned on staying here, but it just be- came home. Following the 1990 tornado, I filed to run for mayor in 1991. Eventu- ally, I was elected to three terms. With those terms in office, I learned how to com- municate with people more. I learned how a community rebounds from something like a tornado. We built in- frastructure, community development and econom- ic development. It built a platform for where we are today. I understand spend- ing guidelines, budget and holding to a budget just like you have to with your house- hold," said Harris about his related experience. "I'm seeking a second term because I enjoy be- ing on it and I think I'm good at it. I think the ca- reers that led to this give me a good perspective. As county council members, we are not rubber stamps. Sometimes it takes me a while to get to different de- cisions. But that's why you have a council, as different people with different back- grounds get involved, we get to a decision from dif- ferent perspectives. And we are working for the better- ment of this county," said Harris. He said his goal is to keep Pike County competitive. "We as a county are at a crossroads. This cross- roads happen to be an in- tersection on I-69. It chang- es the look of our commu- nity. All of our neighbors are competitive. If we don't prepare by building infra- structure to compete, then we fall behind. We have to be on the forefront of this," said Harris. "We aren't just talking about minimum wage jobs, we are talking creating op- portunities for people to have careers in Pike Coun- ty, not just jobs. "I think my experience gives me a different per- spective. I'm very consci- entious about spending the tax dollars you have worked so hard for," said Harris about why people should vote for him. "We do have to spend money on essential things people can't do as individ- uals, like roads and sew- er lines. But being on the council we shouldn't be a rubber stamp. We should weigh what is best for Pike County and our future." Vaughn, Harris vie for County Council District 1 Kurt Vaughn randy harris Myers heating & cooling We service all makes and models. The 2013 payable in 2014 property tax statements have been mailed for the Spring and Fall install- ments. The Spring is due on May 12 and the Fall on November 10. "This is the only notice you will receive and both installment coupons are at- tached. If you did not receive your statements(s), call the Treasurer's office at 812- 354-6363. The State of Indi- ana IC code states the prop- erty owner is required to no- tify the Treasurer's office if they do not receive their statement and if their mail- ing address had changed," said Pike County Treasurer Marta Query. Payments can be made by cash, check or money order in the office. "We do not ac- cept credit cards in the of- fice, however, they can be used online at pikecounty- tax.net," said Query. Office hours are Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and they will be open Satur- day, May 3, 2014, and Sat- urday, May 10, 2014, from 8 a.m. to noon. They will also be open an additional hour on the first due day Monday, May 12, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring preprinted state- ments. "If you do not have your tax statement(s) with payment, the Treasurer's office will not be responsi- ble for any missed parcels that would result in delin- quent tax and penalties," said Query. She added, "Mobile homes can be taxed sepa- rately from the land they sit on. If you own a mobile home and the land it sits on, you may receive two sepa- rate statements. There are a few exceptions to this, as some mobile homes are con- sidered permanent struc- tures, but these are rare. "Due to the large amounts of mail we receive for the spring installment, most payments sent through the mail will not be processed until after May 12, 2014. No penalty will be assessed to these payments as long as the postmark on the enve- lope is May 12, 2014, or pri- or."
