Beauty From Page 1A Neutral shades aren't the only thing that can be spiced up. Clients are now opt- ing for an accent nail, Volk said, which is when the polish on one finger is changed to a different, complimentary color. She said she's also noticing clients requesting two-tone French manicures. Lotion not enough For those who get dry skin in the winter, simply applying lotion won't do the trick. "Applying lotion to the skin without removing the dead skin cells first will cause continued dryness and no results. It's important to exfoliate your skin with a sugar scrub regularly to loosen and remove the dry skin cells and then apply a hand/foot cream. You will see better results," Volk said. "A great, affordable product that works well on dry heels is Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Before bedtime, apply the product directly to your heels and balls of feet, put on socks, and when you wake up, your feet are hydrated and smooth." Polished also offers signature mani- cures and pedicures, which include an organic treatment masque for extra hydration. Getting a pedicure every four to six weeks will keep feet in good condi- tion, Volk said. Great makeup and nails should be paired with a great summer 'do, said Patrick Luvtke, director of education for Vici Capilli, 95 N. Moorland Road, Brook- field. Other than teenagers, who still seem to opt for long hair, Luvtke said versions of the bob are popping back up. "For the first time in awhile, we're see- ing a lot of women wanting short hair," he said. As for color, less contrast and a more subtle look seem to be the summer trend. Brunettes are asking for cool tones, such as violet, and blondes are requesting warmer, golden tones, which even edge into strawberry blonde, Luvtke said. Low-maintenance is also ideal, Bilicki said. Women don't want to be tied to their hair, she said, and instead opt for an easy 'do. To help hair beat the long, cold winter, Bilicki has a trick that's easy to do and great for any budget. At night, apply con- ditioner to the ends of dry hair. Put a towel on the pillow, and sleep with condi- tioner remaining on the ends. Just like that, you'll have smooth locks that are ready for summer. "In the morning, wake up and rinse and you'll see terrific results," she said. "Do it twice a week. It's low on the budget, and your hair will look great." By Kirsten Klahn Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD – It's been a long, dark winter. Something had to be done about the pale reflection in the mirror. When I walked into Brook- field's Tanfastic Tanning Salon for my first spray-on tan, I was a little nervous. I wasn't sure what to expect, what it would turn out like or what exactly it would take to get my pale skin looking golden brown. But, Tanfastic, 13715 W. Capitol Drive, and owner Valarie Garza were commit- ted to helping me through the process. The Mystic Tan is ultravi- olet-free, obtained by step- ping into a booth that uses a spray-on technique, dispens- ing a fine mist of tanning solution in less than 60 sec- onds. When I called to set up my appointment, Garza told me to do two things before com- ing in: exfoliate and mois- turize. Determined to do it right, I arrived for my appointment freshly exfoli- ated and thoroughly mois- turized. The first thing Garza did was go over the federal rec- ommendations with me. The Food and Drug Administra- tion recommends you use goggles, nose plugs and lip balm before heading into the booth. Initially, I was going to forgo the nose plugs, but Garza recommended I use them. I'm glad she did. Need to know Thankfully, before I began my spray-on experience, Garza went over very detailed instructions with me. Here's a run-through of what I learned: First, it's important to put moisturizer on your hands and feet. There was some in the room, so no need to try and remember your own. There was also block provid- ed as well, which you apply to the bottom of your feet and the palm of your hands. Garza recommended that I practiced breathing a few times with my nosepiece in before stepping into the booth. You don't want to breathe in through your mouth, she said. Instead, breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Before leaving me on my own, Garza went through the poses with me. After you press the green button, which starts the booth, you get into your first position. Legs shoulder-width apart, arms to your side and slight- ly forward and your hands should be pointing down with fingers spread. Make sure you're not creating any creases on your skin with your pose. The second pose is pretty similar. You turn so that your back is facing the mist – the only difference is you move your hands slightly more in front of you so that you're not creating a crease on your back. Garza went over this a couple of times with me, made sure I had it down, and then I was on my own. If I was nervous walking into Tanfastic, I was even more nervous getting ready to step into the booth. I moisturized, put block on the needed spots, put on my hair cap, goggles and nose- piece and entered. I pressed the green button and quickly got into my first position. It definitely took me a second to get used to what was happening. The mist, which is light enough to feel fairly cool and refreshing, runs up and down your body several times. When it first started, the breathing was the part that got me. My initial instinct was to open my mouth and suck in some air, but I quickly remembered the proper technique: in through the nose, out through the mouth. I was certainly happy I had opted for the nosepiece. It was over before I knew it, and I stepped out of the booth, once again putting into practice the very detailed instructions I'd received. The wipe-down is the most important part, Garza said. Aggressively wipe down your hands and feet, and do a swipe through each of your cuticles and in between your fingers and toes. Then, proceed to wipe yourself off with a towel. Approach it as you would after you get out of the shower. Make sure you're completely dry, and wipe rather than pat. That's it. Within 20 min- utes, I was on my way toward a golden glow. A sticker I'd put on before my spray tan proved that the color was already working. The tan then slowly begins to develop – when I woke up the next day I had a post- vacation, streak-free glow. The spray tan lasts for four to five days, and you should wait to shower until at least eight hours after. I'm not sure what helped make my tan look so great – the Mystic Tan itself, Garza's directions or my listening skills. Either way, I loved waking up to a golden hue the following morning. My suggestion to first- time spray-tanners out there is to go for it. It's definitely worth giving it a shot. Suddenly, winter doesn't seem so long and dark.
