MARCH CALENDAR Submitted photo Brookfield Academy students in mock trial Students from Brookfield Academy participate in the Region 13 High School Mock Trial Tournament at the Waukesha County Courthouse on Saturday, Feb. 8.The competition included three teams from Brookfield Academy, three from Brookfield East High School, two from Kettle Moraine High School, two from Wauwatosa West High School, one from Pewaukee High School and one from Hartford Union High School. The national competition will be held May 8-10 in Madison. By Darryl J. Enriquez Special to The Freeman WAUKESHA – Complaints from swimmers and beachgo- ers has prompted park offi- cials to pursue a ban on smok- ing cigarettes, cigars and pipes at the Waukesha Coun- ty's six public beaches, begin- ning May 31. Ginny Bocek, parks pro- gram specialist, said the pro- posed ban was introduced to the Waukesha County Park and Planning Commission. Further action will be taken later on the proposal. Beachgoers complained last summer to park officials and lifeguards about smokers dropping their cigarette and cigar stubs onto the sand, Bocek said. "There weren't a lot of com- plaints, but it was steady," she said. "We're concerned about it being a sanitary issue." The proposed ban would not allow smoking, holding or extinguishing lighted cigarettes, cigars and pipes within 40 feet of designated beaches and swim areas. The proposed policy includes the beach house by prohibiting smoking inside or within 40 feet of a building entrance. Messages about the smoking ban would be posted onto signs that spell out regu- lation for beach and beach house use, Bocek said. Maps of restricted areas also would be available. The no-smoking amend- ment would be included in an existing ban that prevents the use of cigars, pipes and cigarettes in county buildings and other designated areas. Smokers are currently banned from dropping lighted cigars or cigarette stubs and pipe contents from moving vehicles while on a park road. Violators of the new restric- tions would be asked to extin- guish their tobacco products. If they refuse, the Sheriff's Department would be sum- moned, Bocek said. The county's six beaches are at the following parks: Muskego, Mukwonago, Minooka, Fox Brook, Menomonee and Nagawicka. The proposed ban will not affect smoking that generally is allowed in all of the parks, Bocek said. County park officials pursuing smoking ban at beaches Would begin May 31 if approved
