Last year, the Brookfield Central High School bas- ketball player averaged 20.6 points per game. "For a guy who is as tal- ented as him and for all the hype he's gotten, he's as humble as you can ask for," said Adams, Central's coach. "The last two years I've had to coach him to be more selfish. This year I didn't, because he gets it now." The bigger the game and the higher the intensity, LaChance didn't need any coaching. He lives for the pressure moment. In the biggest game last season, LaChance scored 32 points in a near upset against state-champion Ger man- town. He wants to play in the big games. He wants to take the big shot. "That's what you play for. You play to play in big games," LaChance said. "You don't play any differ- ent because it's a big game, but I think with all the adrenaline pumping and everyone in the stands, I guess I was cooking that night." Adams said LaChance is a natural scorer and most of the recognition he receives is due to all the points he puts up. That's not what Adams sees every day in practice. "He's got such good vision and is so unselfish," Adams said. "He's very, very caring for how his team does and cares for his teammates – and they know it, too." Adams used to wonder if his teammates would ever get upset with how much LaChance shoots the ball. But LaChance is smart with the ball and knows how to keep his teammates involved. LaChance is smart off the court, too. He has com- mitted to play basketball at Vanderbilt University, and it was the academics that was the biggest pitch. "Not only are their aca- demics exceptional, but so are their athletics," LaChance said. "It doesn't get a whole lot better than Vanderbilt. I felt like home on and off the court when I was there. There's a real sense of family there, and that stood out to me." Adams said he's had a lot of very good point guards at Central with high bas- ketball IQs, and Adams said LaChance's is as good or better than the others. "That comes from all the AAU he's played," Adams said. "His dad was a point guard at Central years ago and a very good one. He's been coached and taught well from his dad, and has a real respect for the game." LaChance keeps at his game and wants to be the best overall player – not just the scorer. LaChance said he models his game after Chris Paul or Steve Nash. "I went to the Chris Paul camp this summer and I learned a lot from him," LaChance said. "I like the pace that he plays at. He taught me to slow myself down at times, to slow the game down and play at my pace." Opposing teams have tried to take him out of his game by being physical, but that hasn't worked. In a tournament in Peoria, Ill., the Lancers played Cham- pagne Central, which bod- ied him up. After being held scoreless for a quar- ter, LaChance finished with 30 points.
