The festival falls on February 14 every year and is celebrated in several countries across the world including US, UK, Can- ada, Japan, France, Chi- na and India. Though the festival commemorates the martyrdom of a Chris- tian saint called St. Valen- tine, the festival as it is cel- ebrated today has little reli- gious significance. In pres- ent times, Valentine's Day has assumed a secular and global flavor and is cele- brated by people of all ag- es and races. Another noticeable fac- tor in Valentine's Day cele- bration of present times is that the festival celebrates love in all its forms and is not just restricted to ro- mantic love. People there- fore exchange Valentine's Day greetings with their parents, teachers, sib- lings, friends, sweethearts or anyone special or close to them. The commonest way of expressing love on Valentine's Day is through exchanging cards, flowers and chocolates. Here are a few valentines day gift ideas that are sure to please you and your Val- entine. romantic dinner This is a day that calls for quality time spent with your Valentine. This can be done by organizing a romantic candlelight din- ner. This can be done easi- ly with a little planning and effort. You can prepare the meal or take someones help in doing so. Be care- ful about the atmosphere as much as the food and the setting. Create roman- ticism by arranging for soft music, beautiful decora- tions and dim lights. This would be one Valentines Day romantic dinner that your Valentine is sure to remember for a long time to come. love poems When the occasion itself speaks of love and romance, your gift should too. This can be done by gifting your special someone a book of love poems, love messag- es or love quotes. You can take this a step ahead by gifting him/her a compi- lation of your own feelings through poems or love let- ters written by you. Present this valentines day gift to your special someone with some beautiful flowers and chocolates to add to the feel of the occasion. flowers Another very creative yet simple valentines day gift are flowers of the appro- priate color. You can pick these flowers yourself and arrange them into a flower vase, glass jar or even a bas- ket. Choose from a range of addons to your gift of blos- soms like heart-shaped bal- loons, pillows or soft toys. Write a love note and place it within the sweet smelling flowers to be discovered by your Valentine. gift Basket One of the most inter- esting yet inexpensive val- entines day gift of love is a gift basket of sweets. val- entines day cake and choc- olates can be the main items in your goodies bas- ket. These can be decorat- ed with ribbons, laces or even a heart shaped card or a bouquet of flowers. Cof- fee or cocoa, dry fruits, per- sonalized mugs with a pic- ture of the two of you or with both your initials on it can also be added to this gift basket. gift of music A valentines day gift of music is one of the most expressive among all gift ideas. This is also one of the most inexpensive val- entines day gifts. You can either buy or record a CD with all of his/her favorite music. You can even add your own compositions to the music collection. Or, maybe record a song in your own voice and add to the list of songs which would add to the value of the gift. No matter what you do on Valentines Day, it is a day that speaks of love and romance. It is considered one of the most romantic days of the year. Valentine's gift ideas The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, February 12, 2014 A-11
