Page 22 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, February 17-February 23, 2011 Outdoor Truths By Gary Miller By The fi shermen around here are com- ing out of their hibernation. The walleye and crappie are ringing the dinner bell and the bass are getting more active as well. The stories will soon be plenti- ful. I hope the fi lets will as well. Even though there are many dif- ferent stimuli that cause a fi sh to do certain things; one of those is temper- ature. In a lake, most fi sh are more ac- tive when the water is neither too hot nor too cold. This time of year, when the sun begins to warm the surface of the water, fi sh soak in that warmth and become more active. This activity creates the need for food which you and I are glad to provide – at a cost of course. And sometimes that cost is dear! While fi sh are becoming more ac- tive, the approach for catching them still requires a slow presentation. That is, most bass fi shermen right now pre- fer to slowly fi sh a jig or a crankbait. Anything too fast will most likely cause that bass to stay sunning next to that rock. As the temperature rises, those same fi sh will be more apt to react to faster moving baits. make any decision when I am either www..outdoortruths.org A pastor once told me to never FOR SALE FOR SALE CAR SEAT, NEWBORN TO Toddler, dark blue. Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ too high or too low. If I do, I will most likely make the wrong decision. He was so right! What he was saying was that the tem- perature of my temperament must be neither too hot nor too cold when mak- ing major decisions. I must make sure that I am in my best thinking weather when it’s time act. Some of you right now are contem- plating something that you may regret. You may have just been scathed by your boss and you are planning your “take this job and shove it” speech. Or it may be that you have just gotten a big raise and as a result you are close to buying a yellow Hummer. For the sake of every member of your family, let me beg you to stop! Don’t make a move! Step away from the computer, or the car lot, or even the ledge! Wait until your temperature and tempera- ment is back to normal-functioning mode. When it is, you may still want to fi re your boss or buy that Hummer, but you will do so with a clear head. Other- wise, there may be an unwanted hook embedded in a bad decision. Moss Lake will once again be the site for the second annual David Baptist Church benefit tournament. This event is hosted by A-1 Welding and will be held March 19 with a 7am blast-off and a 3:30 weigh-in. Entry fee for this event is $60 in advance or $70 the morning of the event. There will be a 5 fish limit with all measuring at least 14 inches. Robert Fitch is the man behind the tournament and did a good job last year, I expect that to be even greater this year.
