features Just like any other married couple, Mom and Dad were eager to start trying for kids right after they were married in 2012. However, the couple was told by an OB/GYN that their chance of having a baby was slim to none. They also weren't given any options for treatment because Mom was annovulatory (did not ovulate each month) and Dad's sperm count was very low. The couple decided to get a second opinion at Red Rock Fertility Center, and Dr. Mark Severino restored their hopes. He assured the couple that with ULTRA IVF (IVF with genetic screening for the embryos), their chances for having a baby were actually quite good. So they moved forward and within six weeks of starting the cycle they were pregnant! Now this year the couple has welcomed their beautiful son James. Congratulations James, our February Baby of the Month. A my Febbo has been involved in water-resource management and conservation since 1998. She launched her career as an intern with the Las Vegas Valley Water District and ascending the ranks within the organization to achieve the position of senior management analyst with the organization, which owns, operates and constructed the 180- acre Las Vegas Springs Preserve, of which Febbo was named manager in 2011. Fe b b o i s r e s p o n s i b l e f o r o v e r s e e i n g operations for the Preserve, including museums, galleries, botanical gardens, animal collections and trails. Her duties also include oversight of guest services functions and development of site-wide programming plans. Along with her team of nearly four dozen permanent employees, Febbo is working to open four new attractions on campus, including DesertSol – UNLV's award-winning entry in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon – and is expected to open to the public Feb. 14. "DesertSol is in perfect alignment with our mission, which is to promote sustainability and cutting-edge technology," said Febbo, an Oregon native, who is also gearing up for the fall opening of the new Butterfly Habitat, "an immersive experience where guests will be surrounded by upward of 1,000 butterflies from all over the world flying free." The WaterWorks Museum – also opening in fall of 2014 on campus at the Charleston Heights Pumping Station – will educate guests on the mechanics of water quality and supply and delivery systems, while the Historic Streetscape – opening in late 2015 – will depict life in early Las Vegas and be anchored by four original Railroad Cottages, which were erected between 1909-1911. "The Railroad Cottages are important to our history because they were the first residential housing in Las Vegas, and the railroad really was the impetus for our city," Febbo said. Since Febbo took the reins as manager, the Springs Preserve has experienced a 22 percent increase in attendance and a 60 percent increase in education program participation. "We designed the Springs Preserve to be a community resource and gathering place, so as we continue to grow and expand we hope that more people will continue to come and be proud to engage here," she said. — By Danielle Birkin Amy Febbo Manager Las Vegas Springs Preserve W ith a passion for philanthropy and a natural knack for community outreach, Terrie D'Antonio has been the driving force behind HELP of Southern Nevada, ser ving as president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization – committed to assisting individuals and families become self-sufficient through direct services, training and referrals — for the past decade. The Oregon native, who moved to Southern Nevada in 1978, oversees a staff of some 90 employees and has a plethora of goals for 2014. First up: After securing HELP of Southern Nevada as the location of the state's first and only Framing Hope Warehouse last fall, D'Antonio is committed to increasing awareness of this remarkable new program, which offers low-cost home-building supplies to nonprofit organizations through a partnership with the Home Depot Foundation managed by Good360. " Wi t h t h e Fr a m i n g H o p e Wa r e h o u s e program, 12 local Home Depot stores donate and repurpose discontinued or overstocked merchandise, which we then sell for a small administrative fee to other nonprofits for about 70 percent less than they would normally pay," D'Antonio said, adding that HELP of Southern Nevada operates the seventh Framing Hope Warehouse in the nation. "Right now we have about 40 nonprofits signed up, so this year we're pushing to get more of them involved, as we work with well more than 100." D'Antonio is also moving aggressively forward this year with continued fundraising efforts for the new Shannon West Homeless Youth Center, which provides services for at-risk youth who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. "We are looking to raise another $3 million to $4 million, but this will be the year we actually pick up shovels and move the dirt, and we hope to start moving kids in off the streets and into a new building near our campus on East Flamingo Road within the next 12 months," D'Antonio said, adding that the new facility will increase the number of beds from 65 to as many as 120, and will also have more drug and alcohol treatment beds. "We are also encouraging our $10 on the 10 th donor program, where individuals donate $10 on the 10 th of each month." — By Danielle Birkin Terrie D'AnTonio President and CEO HELP of Southern Nevada _WomenToWatch_020314.indd 5 1/30/14 2:17 PM
