The Press-Dispatch Haubstadt defeats visiting Lady Chargers, 36-25 Host Haubstadt outscored visiting Pike Central 21-10 in the second half to post a 36-25 win in an eighth grade girls' basketball game on Monday, Dec. 15. "This was another conference loss that was hard to take," said Lady Chargers' head coach Eric Knight, whose team fell to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "The girls played very well the first half of the game, but Haubstadt is a good team and they outplayed us. Any loose balls or rebounds, they came up with." According to Knight, Pike Central was out-rebounded "bad" by the Lady Elites, and shot very poorly in the second half. "We missed a lot of open baskets," Knight said. "Turn- overs were another big factor in this loss. We threw the ball away way too much. So rebounding and ball-handling are two things we have to get better at." However, Knight added that with three more games scheduled this week – at Princeton on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at home against Owensville on Thursday, Dec. 19, and at Barr-Reeve on Saturday, Dec. 21 – the Lady Chargers won't have much of an opportunity in practice to work on improving in those areas. "We have three more games this week and we are going to fight back from this and finish strong before we go on the holiday break," Knight said. Erika Hendrixson led Pike Central in scoring with 11 points. "Erika had a break-out that us coaches have been waiting to see," Knight said. "She drove the ball to the basket and went strong tot he rim." Audra Stone added nine points in the loss, while Demi Croak and Brook Nalley added four and two points, respectively. Jalah Barnes rounded out the scoring for the Lady Chargers with one point. In the seventh grade game, Haubstadt rallied from a 13-12 halftime deficit to defeat Pike Central 33-29. Becca Crow paced the Lady Chargers with 12 points while Jordyn Graham added 10. McKenzie Dunn and Hailey Marchino rounded out the scoring with five and two points, respectively. After having not played since Dec. 2 due to inclement weather conditions, the Lady Chargers turned the ball over 26 times including on seven of their first eight possessions while falling to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "The entire week of no practice and no games was most definitely a contributing factor to the loss," said Pike Central head coach Ryne Biesterveld. "There were many contributing factors to the loss, but when it comes right down to it, we didn't play well enough to win." Heritage Hills (4-0) was able to capitalize on only two of the Lady Chargers' first seven turnovers, taking a 4-0 lead on baskets Pike Central Middle School seventh grader Hailey Marchino (24) fires up a shot over Heritage Hills' Lydia Genet (10) during game action on Thursday, Dec. 12. An exchange of baskets by Pike Central's Jordan Montgomery and Heritage Hills' Ali Wade left the Lady Patriots holding a 14-4 halftime lead. Back-to-back baskets by Kylee Shoultz and Hailey Marchino to start the second half cut Heritage Hills' lead to 14-8 with 3:03 left in the third period before the Lady Patriots, after missing their first four field goal attempts of the second half, scored on a steal and a lay-up by Lydia Genet. Following an exchange of baskets by Marchino and Heritage Hills' Morgan Vaal, Graham hit a jumper to pull the Lady Chargers to within 18-12 with 5:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. After the Lady Patriots stretched their lead to 21-12 on a free throw by Genet and a basket by Wade, Pike Central scored four consecutive points on baskets by Graham and Becca Crow to cut the deficit to 21-15 with 1:10 left.
