(Photo Submitted) Patoka Valley Outdoors By Sam Whiteleather Hunting The American Woodcock Frans, my German Short Haired pointer, energetically weaves through the small clumps of trees and briars that grow along the little stream, his tail wagging furiously, indicating birds are near. The strip of leafless woods, no wider than 100 yards, is flanked on both sides by golden stands of prairie grass and dissected down the middle by a small creek, which gives the woods the smell of damp, rich dirt. It's late October and with temps in the 50s and overcast skies, I'm happy to be in the field. The strip of woods is fairly thick with wellthorned briars, and as I move forward I feel the sharp pain of several bury their hooked daggers into my right arm. I freeze, momentarily held like a horse hitched to a stubborn stump. I look ahead at Frans. He's on point. Every muscle in his liver-colored body tensed, his head held perfectly still looking in the direction where he thinks the bird is, and his short white-tipped tail that was moments ago wagging like a pendulum on steroids, is now motionless and sticking straight up. The American Woodcock is a common resident of Pike County. The small brown bird, with an unusually long bill and large eyes, can be found here in good numbers, especially during the spring and fall migrations. In the spring, male Woodcocks perform an elaborate courtship flight in open fields. Near dusk, they fly high into the air in a circular pattern before descending in an erratic kamikaze like flight accompanied by rapid chirpings. Some birds will spend the summer in our area, with females raising young here, while others continue migrating north. In the fall, groups of birds called "flights" will use local stopover sites to rest and feed enroute to states as far south as Louisiana. And speaking of feeding, Woodcock feed on earth worms, which they locate by probing the soil with their long bills. Once they've found one, they pull the worm out by pinching it with their bill, which is hinged toward the middle, similar to how one would grab a Chinese noodle with a pair of chop sticks. With Frans still on point, and me still stuck in the briars, I quickly perform a backwards rolling movement, which, while still painful, is not nearly so as plowing forward. I hurry toward my dog, my trusty double barrel at the ready. As I near, the bird flushes, but instead of flying away from me like any normal game bird would do, it flies directly toward me, its long bill, light brown face and bugged out eyes come sharply into focus as it passes over my head. Catching me completely off guard, I turn and take aim as the bird flies away fast, weaving in and out of the small trees. I fire; but he flies on, landing a short distance ahead. Frans and I move toward where we think he went down. Maybe this flush I'll connect and Woodcock will be on the menu at the Whiteleather residence, but to be realistic about my shooting abilities, in a month or so this bird will probably be packed in with hundreds of others enjoying the sunshine and warmth of a winter home somewhere in Louisiana. Free DNR program will teach squirrel hunting Registration is open for a free Indiana Department of Natural Resources program that will teach participants how to hunt squirrels in Indiana. "Hunt, Fish, Eat: Squirrels" is part of the ongoing "Hunt, Fish, Eat" program offered through the DNR's Division of Fish & Wildlife that teaches Hoosiers selfreliance. The program is Saturday, Jan. 4, from noon to 4 p.m. at DNR Fire Headquarters in Morgan-Monroe State Forest, outside Martinsville. The program will focus on laws and regulations, firearms and safety, locating a hunting spot, field dressing your harvest, and handling and preparing your squirrel for the table. The session will include an opportunity to sample squirrel recipes and examine hunting gear and resources. Participants must be new hunters, or new to small game hunting. All equipment is provided. Space is limited, so hunters are encouraged to register early. The program is offered with sponsorship and volunteer support from Squirrels Unlimited. To register or receive more information, call the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife at (317) 234-8440 or email dfwed@dnr.IN.gov.
