B-6 The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 18, 2013 8th grade girls roll over Lady Jeeps, 35-26 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team kept visiting Northeast Dubois to just three second-half points while rolling to a 35-26 victory early Saturday, Dec. 14. Ahead 26-23 at halftime, the Lady Chargers scored nine consecutive points to extend their lead to 35-23, before the Lady Jeeps finally scored when Tyla Rasche hit one of two free throw attempts with 13.8 seconds left in the game. After making 10 of 25 field goal attempts in the first half, including two of four tries from beyond the three-point line, Northeast Dubois went 0-for-20 from the floor in the second half until Mackenzie Zehr hit a jumper at the final buzzer. The Lady Jeeps, who converted nine offensive rebounds into 10 points during the first half, had just three in the second half while being out-rebounded by Pike Central 25-14. "The first half of the game we were still sleeping, I think," said Lady Chargers head coach Eric Knight, whose team improved to 7-1. "We were not blocking out or getting after it on the defensive side. Northeast Dubois had a couple of girls that could shoot the ball pretty good and they were hurting us on our weak side of the defense. "We made a few adjustments in the locker room at halftime and came out in the second half blocking out and rotating much better on defense," Knight added. Jalah Barnes scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as Pike Central took a 1614 lead into the second period. Then, with the score tied at 1818, the Lady Chargers scored eight consecutive points – on a pair of baskets by Audra Stone, one by Brook Nalley and a pair of free throws by Barnes – to surge ahead 26-18 with 1:44 left in the first half. A basket by Rasche and a threepoint play by Kourtney Quinn pulled the Lady Jeeps to within 26-23 with 27.1 seconds remaining in the second period. Those would be the last points scored by Northeast Dubois until Rasche's free throw with 13.8 seconds left in the fourth period. Pike Central, which out-rebounded the Lady Jeeps 34-29, had 17 steals in the contest, including seven by Nalley, who scored eight points, and five by Stone, who al- so scored eight points while grabbing eight rebounds. "Brook had a great game on the defensive end and also on offense," Knight said. "She drove the ball hard to the basket. Audra also did very well at driving the ball and knocking down some outside shots." Barnes, who grabbed six rebounds to go along with four steals, was efficient offensively, knocking down four of six field goal attempts while sinking five of six tries from the charity stripe. She also dished out a pair of assists. "Jalah came out doing what Jalah does," Knight said. "She drove the ball great and she really worked hard at fighting for positions and using her body to get to the ball or get to the rim. "Once we get the offense side to slow down and run the plays, they will be a group of young ladies that will be a fun team to watch and go really far through their high school careers," Knight added. "I am very proud of this team and can't wait for all their hard work and effort to come together." Erika Hendrixson added six points in the winning effort, while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. For the game, Pike Central made 15 of 56 field goal attempts, a 26.8 percent average, and hit five of eight tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 14 times. "The girls did an excellent job of trying to get to the rim," Knight said. "This was a physical game and we didn't knock all our shots down. But, as a coach, I am very proud of them as they kept trying to attack the rim." Quinn led North Daviess with nine points while Adia Denu and Rasche added six and five points, respectively. Quinn, who dished out a gamehigh three assists, had nine rebounds, as did Rasche. Claire Mangin, meanwhile, grabbed five rebounds. For the game, the Lady Jeeps made 11 of 46 field goal attempts, a 23.9 percent average, and hit two of three tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 24 times. Pike Central, which traveled to Haubstadt on Monday, Dec. 16, will play at Princeton tonight, before returning home to take on Owensville on Thursday, Dec. 19. On Saturday, Dec. 21, the Lady Chargers will travel to Barr-Reeve.
