SPORTS DECEMBER 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove • Page 3B STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET Flatley finally gets a medal – a gold one Central senior wins state championship By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Elizabeth Flatley envisioned the perfect race in her mind. Flatley knew what she wanted to do in the initial stages of the WIAA Division 1 state cross country meet. She knew when she wanted to make a push. She knew how she wanted to finish out the race. She executed all of that perfectly last month, and the Brookfield Central High School senior captured the state title by running the 4,000-meter course in 14:11.11 at The Ridges Golf Course. "My race plan was to get out and try to make my move around the mile, maybe mile and a quarter," said Flatley, who finished seventh in her previous three trips to state. "I really took off after that mile and a quarter." Flatley is familiar with running in front. She entered the state meet with the top time on the state honor roll and was the champion of her sectional as well as the Greater Metro Conference. But state is always a different race. "She likes to lead and she's been the lead runner all year," Central coach Lorie Lewis said. "At the state meet, she knew she'd have people on her. She had to work through that mentally to have girls try to take it. "That first mile might have been anxious for her. Usually by the half-mile, she's so far out nobody is going to beat her. After the mile, you could see she kept putting distance on the other runners." Flatley's seventh-place fin- ishes have kept her off the medals podium the last three years. This year, the WIAA awarded medals to the top 10, but being at the top of the medal stand helped erase the heartache of missing the medal stand in the past. "Being on the podium has been my dream since ninth grade," Flatley said. "Each year to miss out by that little makes this so much sweeter." While Flatley didn't make her move until after the first mile, she did get off to a quick start – a necessity at state. But having been in three previous state meets, Flatley was ready for Saturday's tempo. "That was lots of experience," she said. "I knew coming in I was going to go out much faster than I normally go. After that, I was trying to establish position." And with a soft rain throughout the race, Flatley was able to focus more on the race and less on other distractions. "It keeps my mind off the pain," she said. "I didn't have any negative doubts. I didn't even think I (won) until I crossed the line. It was a great distraction." Flatley helped Central to fifth place in the team race. Sophomore Lucy Kwiatkowski was 25th in 15:11.1, junior Megan Hlava 65th in 14:39.56, senior Danielle Kulpins 69th in 15:43.06 and senior Paulina Agnello 75th in 15:46.86. "I'm so proud of them," Lewis said of her team, which won the GMC title. "The whole team ran terrific. "This was the one meet all season we came together. One meet, so- and-so didn't run well or this girl didn't run well. Even at conference and sectionals, we had one or two not do so well. "That was our team today . That's what we had in us all season."
