SPORTS Page 2B • Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove DECEMBER 2013 East boys make state vball semis Second tournament berth for Spartans By Mark Hutchinson Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD – Tim Owen had heard the question before. "Is your young team ahead of its time?" The sixth-year Brookfield East High School boys volleyball coach was too caught up in the thrill of the moment to contemplate a definitive answer. Owen's Spartans – without a senior on their roster – outlasted Greater Metro Conference rival Wauwatosa East 18-25, 2517, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11 in a sectional championship match to earn the second WIAA state tournament berth in the program's history 13 years after the first. , The Spartans, who have never won a state championship, swept Kaukauna 25-16, 25-19, 2523 in a state quarterfinal match at Wisconsin Lutheran College but lost in five games to eventual state champ Marquette. The Spartans, who had lost in five games to the Red Raiders during the GMC season, spotted them a one-game advantage in the rematch, but East took control of the second game during a three-point service run by junior setter/opposite Josh Schmirler that featured back-toback kills by Klassen. Junior libero Adam Wessel clinched the Game 2 victory with a three-point service run. Three-point service runs by junior setter/defensive specialist Jared Wilgus and junior middle blocker/outside hitter Graydon Schroeder keyed the Spartans' 25-22 triumph in Game 3. "This was a really intense match," said Schroeder, who totaled 15 blocks and 13 kills. "We played out of our minds and so did they ." The Red Raiders, led by senior Ben Plaisted, a Loyola (Ill.) University recruit, took the fourth game 25-23. They built a 5-2 lead in the decisive fifth game, but Owen made a few strategic changes and his Spartans came storming back. "For the past couple weeks, we'd been working on triple- "I told the guys going into the season that we are a young team, and people will say 'Just , think of how good we'll be next year,'" Owen said after winning the sectional championship. "But after our Racine tournament early in the year, I said, 'This is a special group.' I didn't know what the outcome might be, but I will say that I'm not shocked that we're going to state. We're a very good team. We had to play very well to do it, but we earned it. "When you have a young team, you can always say 'Wait , until next year,' but our mentality is that we're pretty good this year." Junior outside/opposite hitter Matt Klassen, who made a teamhigh 17 kills against Tosa East, also put his young squad's accomplishment in perspective. "This is truly special," he said. "It's rare to have such youth and such talent at the same time." blocking Plaisted," Klassen said. "We knew he was the main threat. We wanted to do anything we could to stop him from making plays." Schroeder noted that his team broke a recent trend. "We'd lost every fifth game we've played in the last two years," he said. "We had to rally and finally close one out. And we did it." Owen admired his team's poise. "Whenever we get to sectionals, we tell the guys, 'Be suspicious in life of anything that comes easy,'" the coach said. "This never does. We got to the sectional final and were down 25 in Game 5. But these guys just made plays. They've done that collectively from the start of the season. They're a very tight group. Everyone has stepped up and made plays. "This is just awesome. I couldn't be prouder of a group of kids." East sophomore opposite/outside hitter Matt Szews had 10 kills and six blocks Submitted photo Big day for Corwin BROOKFIELD – Brookfield East High School's Felix Corwin recently signed a national letter of intent to play tennis at Minnesota.
