What isn't there to love about new things? With a new season of Bravo's "Top Chef" on the horizon, the now-familiar formula's tossing in an extra dose of "newness" this time out: New Orleans. Yep, for this 11th season, some of the nation's most promising up-and-coming chefs are headed down to the Big Easy to take in one of the country's most recognizable food scenes — while competing to be the last chef standing, of course. Emeril Lagasse, Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Hugh Acheson as seen in "Top Chef" Bookhout Funeral Home 2x2 While "Top Chef: New Orleans" may premiere Wednesday, Oct. 2, some of the more Internet-savvy viewers have already gotten an early taste of what's to come. "Top Chef's" host Padma Lakshmi has been doing a side gig online, where she's visited many of New Orleans' own "top chefs" and put them through their paces to decide who's worthy of entering the competition ("Padma's Picks" are still available to view on Bravo's website at www.bravotv.com). But it isn't all flashy and new. There's a reason we all have comfort foods that we keep coming back to. Awardwinning chef Tom Colicchio is returning as the competition's head judge, and "Food & Wine" magazine's Gail Simmons will be joining him to provide insightful — and often biting — commentary on the contestants' dishes. Also making a comeback is the online extra "Last Chance Kitchen." First appearing two seasons ago in "Top Chef: Texas," the vignettes showcase the eliminated chefs going head-to-head in a contest to cook their way back into the competition. Besides being fast-paced fan favorites, these mini-episodes have earned themselves Emmy nominations and secured themselves as just one more piece of "Top Chef's" winning formula. And what a formula it is. In a TV landscape that's filled with food programming for virtually every taste, "Top Chef" rises above the crowd. Unlike countless other reality shows, "Top Chef" doesn't just bring fame and a cash prize to its winner, it can launch a promising chef's career. Not only is the "Top Chef" awarded a sizable cash prize and the publicity that comes from appearing in a hit show, but he or she is also given a spread in "Food & Wine" magazine, and is featured at the magazine's annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colo. It's the kind of attention that can thrust a young chef into the culinary scene's spotlight, and that's just what these hopefuls are looking for.
