" I feel like we will preform very well as long as our offense is fast and quick defense," said senior Taylor Zazueta. "We scrimmaged Chico and it was a very good match, it was very back and forth," said junior Daisy Brose. But the team seems to have lack of intensity during practices and matches said some of the players but have been practicing very well and working hard.. J.V. football first game end in a tie team hopes to get a win this friday Grey Grotke Staff Writer JV football played its first game for this year Friday the 6. The game ended in a tie against Oroville, which, means this year's JV is already doing better than they did last year. We hope we can infer from this that the team as a whole has improved. This may be the case, as JV football lost significantly to Oroville last year, and now has at least managed to tie. According to JV football captain Dusty Loyd the team is "better than last year," in "every position." Quarterback Lane Pritchard agrees, stating he believes the team has made improvements. Coach Sanders also believes the team has improved and commented that the team, "Had a rough season last year, but the kids are working hard and they're a fun group to be around." The other members of the team agree that the group has a likeable attitude. Dusty Loyd called them a "Great group of people," and Lane Pritchard went as far as to say that the team has a brotherly relationship. "They're all my brothers," said Pritchard. When asked what the greatest strength of JV football would be this year, Sean Stanley replied, "Defense, last week they only scored one touch down," JV foot ball player Zack Howard agrees, stating of the upcoming game today "Defense will do great," The JV football team expresses confidence regarding this upcoming game. "We'll be coming out on top," said Zack Howard. You can watch the JV Spartans today at 5:30 in their first home game against Anderson. But with all the practices the girls feel as if they are ready to perform at their highest. "We have the potential to perform very well as long as we work together", said sophomore Brittany Botel. But with their high hopes, they still have a lot to work on in practice. "We are really good, but we all still have our individual stuff we need to work on," said sophomore Stefanie Brunello. She also added that passers need to work on consistently passing so the hitters can get a good set so we can get longer rallies. But some of the players had to adjust to playing in a positions. "I am a front side opposite now, but last year I was middle,It took a lot of adjusting but it works for me since I'm ambidextrous," said Botel. The team plays their next match tomorrow at Red Bluff High School for a tournament. Girls tennis starts off season and hopes to set high bars Garrett Ward Staff Writer Red Bluff Varsity Girls Tennis is starting off the year with positive outlooks and high bars to set. The Lady Spartans are led by sophomore, Ginger Shaffer, and the upper portion of their ladder is held by one junior, Aislynn Lair, and seniors Erika Ellis, Josie Clements, and Emmaline Iverson. Only one freshman cracks the top six spots on the ladder: Rylee DuFrain. "I'm glad to be back in the swing of things. I missed my teammates and I'm excited to compete for the high school one last year," says senior, Josie Clements. Clements, like a few of the senior girls, have competed on the tennis team all four years of high school. She claims the start of the new season has been bittersweet but Clements is excited nonetheless. Clements continued to talk confidently about her team. After the team win at Foothill this last Tuesday, Clements spoke highly of the team's comradery and ability to rally behind each other. "All of us girls get along very well and we almost enjoy our hot practices as much as our matches. We go beyond practices to do fun team bonding events. This team might be the most closely knit group of girls I've been with," says sophomore, Ginger Shaffer. Shaffer, the team's number one player, won her match in two sets with set scores of 6-4, 6-4. Her match was especially crucial in winning the overall team match which was won 5-4 over Foothill. The Lady Spartans next few team matches are away and they will not have a home match until the seventeenth of September.
