They're known for picky palettes and unfinished meals. Sometimes just trying to get your little guys and gals to eat their vegetables can feel like a war's broken out in the dining room. Envy, then, those parents whose kids don't just eat everything on their plates — they've prepared the whole meal themselves. And starting Sunday, Sept. 8, eight of these kids of the kitchen will battle it out under the leadership of two of the Food Network's biggest celebrities. Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri are squaring off against each other in a special edition of their hit show "Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off" — only this time it's pint-sized culinary prodigies they're men- toring, not celebrities. In this special, four-episode spinoff, "Rachael vs Guy: Kids Cook-Off," the two energetic Food Network personalities take eight kids into the kitchen and put them through their paces in a classic kitchen cookoff. The idea may raise a few eyebrows (throwing kids into the kitchen with sharp knives and hot stoves, then forcing them to compete with each other for adults' enjoyment?), but dig a bit below the surface and it becomes clear that this isn't your ordinary big-boy competition. For one thing, these kids are no neophytes: they're up-and-coming culinary masters, as at home with a 400-degree oven as most kids are with the latest video game. After each challenge, the panel of judges grades each dish and presents its chef with a "report card." The kid with the highest overall score at the end of the competition will be crowned champion. And, of course, the little guys and gals have a pair of experts watching their every move. Ray and Fieri are two of the Food Network's most ubiquitous celebrities, and fans of "Rachael vs Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off" know that the pair have a knack for imparting their skills on folks who are without the slightest ounce of cooking know-how; teaching these prodigies should be a breeze for the pair. Of course, in the end there can only be one winner — it wouldn't be much of a competition otherwise. The junior chef who scores the highest overall grade will win his or her own web series on www.foodnetwork.com — a prize of which even adults dream.
