The grant is from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study the development of psoriasis, and to evaluate molecules that have the potential to prevent psoriatic symptoms and that could be models for drug development, the MCW said in a press release. Sam T. Hwang, M.D., the Thomas J. Russell Family / Milwaukee Community Dermatologists professor and chair of dermatology at MCW is the primary investiga, tor of the grant. Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system typified by areas of skin thickening, scaling and cracking. Up to 3 percent of the world's population is affected, and there is no cure for the lifelong condition. In this project, researchers will investigate molecules that allow the movement of immune cells into the skin tissue when the skin is immunologically activated. This project builds upon work funded by a 2012 National Psoriasis Foundation Lutto Translational Grant. Fish Fry ALL Day Everyday! "I think it's the step in the right direction." When doing market research, Kachelski said they learned that respondents found the database to be especially beneficial when they are caring for another loved one, like an elderly parent. "I think the other thing that stood out from the consumer research was how valuable the patients perceived this in being when they were responsible for someone else's health care," he said. A benefit of the WISHIN database is making health care networks portable, Kachelski said, allowing records to follow a patient wherever they are receiving care. "Our aim is to be ubiquitous in the state," he said. Hanson said the main reason Wheaton Franciscan Health Care signed on to the database was to help emergency room patients and their doctors. "With WISHIN we get additional information about some of the testing and results that were done at other visits," she said. Hanson said she doesn't have any security concerns about the database, saying that the system has robust safeguards. WISHIN is an independent not-for-profit organization that is building a statewide health information network to connect physicians, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and clinical laboratories across Wisconsin. The database that WISHIN is creating should be up and running soon and will give doctors and other health care providers access to patients' medical histories, prescriptions, recent diagnoses, allergies and test results. WISHIN CEO Joe Kachelski said Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, Aurora Health Care, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Columbia St. Mary's and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin have all signed on to be part of the database. Christine Bessler, chief information officer and vice president of information technology for ProHealth Care, said they are in the final legal stages of joining the network. She said the benefit will be mostly for the patients. "We're happy to participate.
