September 6, 2013 • Milwaukee Post • 11 Prediction: Green Bay will fall to 49ers in season opener Defense must raise its level for Packers to advance to the NFC playoffs "HOMER" on SPORTS STEVE "The HOMER" TRUE The Packers will be 10-6 or 11-5 this season because of the greatness of Aaron Rodgers. The ability to advance in the playoffs will be determined by the play of the rest of the team. The Packers are starting the season with the two offensive tackles as the weakest members of the offensive unit. It would seem very unlikely that the offense can be good enough or balanced enough to lead the Packers to postseason success with big questionmarks at both left and right tackle. Don Barclay, David Bakhtiari and Marshall Newhouse will determine whether the offense is just good or special. Their level of play, and not the talent of Eddie Lacy, will determine if the Packers have an improved running game. The defense needs to find another impact player to go along with Clay Matthews. The Super Bowl-winning team had Matthews, Charles Woodson, Nick Collins with help from B.J. Raji and Cullen Jenkins. Who is capable of playing at the star level with Matthews? File photo The Green Bay Packers will need another impact player to complement all-pro linebacker Clay Matthews. The Packers could end up being a better team than the 2010 Super Bowl-winning Packers and still do nothing special in the playoffs. The competition is better. San Francisco and Seattle are better than any team the 2010 Packers faced in the NFC playoffs, and the 2013 Falcons are better than the 2010 team beaten by the Packers. It will be a good year, but it will not be a special year. *** Special is the right word to describe the North Dakota State Bisons football team. I would have written the entire column about their win last Saturday over Kansas State if not for the start of the Packers' season. I am in awe of their fourth-quarter drive and come-from-behind road win. It was as good as any late-game drive I've ever seen. It was as good as the Packers' Ice Bowl game-winning drive. It was as good as the "The Drive" by John Elway and the Broncos in the postseason win over the Cleveland Browns. It was probably better than both considering that North Dakota State doesn't even play at the same level of college football as Kansas State. There is someone very, very Brewers Community Foundation reaches $5M Post Staff MILWAUKEE – The Brewers Community Foundation marked $5 million in gross revenue raised in the BCF 50/50 Raffle, the Milwaukee Brewers announced this week. The BCF 50/50 Raffle is currently in its fourth season. The raffle eclipsed the $1 million mark for the 2013 season on July 7, the earliest date that milestone has been reached since the inception of the raffle in 2010. Now in its fourth season, tickets for the BCF 50/50 Raffle are sold for just $2 throughout Miller Park from the time gates open during every Brewers home game. For each game, half of the net proceeds are given to a lucky fan and the other half benefits Brewers Community Foundation. Some of the nonprofit programs previously supported by the foundation include Arts at Large, Beckum Stapleton Little League, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, COA Youth and Family Services, the Felix Mantilla Little League, the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast, the Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, Make-a-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin, the Sojourner Family Peace Center, the Susan G. Komen of Southeast Wisconsin, the United Performing Arts Fund, the United Way, the YMCA of Metropolitan Wisconsin and the YWCA. Brewers Community Foundation, Inc. is the official charitable arm of the Milwaukee Brewers. If he can throw well enough to play in the NFL, he will be a starting quarterback in the league. He led the Bisons 80 yards for the winning score at Kansas State. It turned a 2117 deficit into a 24-21 win. Those numbers don't speak to anything THAT special. The greatness of the drive began with the Bisons taking possession at their own 20yard line with 9 minutes left in the game. They proceeded to drive 80 yards in 18 plays, making four third-down conversions. Jensen scored the game-winning touchdown with 28 seconds left. Perfection. They scored and made sure that Kansas State had no time left for a comeback of their own. Every coach at every level of football should show the tape of the drive to their football team. No team has ever shown more patience, more poise, and more confidence in dominating the bigger, better team on their home field. The 49ers are the better team, and they are playing at home. It is a huge game because it will go a long way in determining if Dom Capers should remain as the defensive coordinator after this season. Unlike the playoff game last season, the Packers will be ready for the Niners' offense and Colin Kaepernick. The Packers were so unprepared in the 45-31 loss that the firing of Capers would have been justified at the end of last season. Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy clearly still believe in Capers, but another embarrassing defensive performance against Jim Harbaugh's team would mean that Capers must be replaced at the end of the season.
