Z a c h P a r k e r , Shelby SAL Squadron 82 Commander, is co- ordinating the efforts and said this year's goal is to place 600 wreaths on graves. Each wreath spon- sorship costs $17 with $5 going back to the Shelby Ameri- can Legion Family. Each sponsorship goes toward a fresh balsam wreath that will be placed on the grave of an American hero. The SAL will also take requests to honor specific veterans at Sunset and Webb, or "to go" orders if you wish to take a wreath to a veteran at another Cemetery. Those orders for a specific veteran or to be See WREATHS, Page 4 Shelby SAL Squadron #82 coordinating December 16th to honor Veterans Wreaths Across America on sale Wreaths Across America (WAA) will be celebrated this year on Sat- urday, Decem- ber 16. WAA is a national day of remembrance as wreaths are placed on the graves of veterans. The Shelby Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron#82, along with the other American Legion Fam- ily of organizations, are taking orders to purchase wreaths and to recruit v o l u n t e e r s to place the wreaths on the graves of veterans at Sunset and Webb M e m o r i a l Cemeteries on De- cember 16. Wreaths Across A m e r i c a w a s started in 2007 as a non-profit orga- nization to promote placing wreaths on the graves of veterans. In 1992, the Morrill Worcester family of Worcester Wreaths started the tradition of plac- ing wreaths on graves when they donated thousands of wreaths for graves at Arling- ton National Cemetery. Today, wreaths are placed on graves at over 2,500 locations. You may have a wreath placed on the grave of a loved one at Sunset or Webb Memorial Cemeteries by ordering on line at http://WreathsacrossA- merica.org/NC0376P or you Shelby American Legion Auxiliary members Jean Lankford and Denise Smith are ready to give wreaths to people who purchased them to place on individual graves other than Sunset or Webb Memorial Cemeteries. Rebecca Higgins, Shelby American Legion Auxiliary member places wreaths on the graves of Eugene W. Hoyle, and Warren F. Hoyle, a Marine who died in WWI. The Shelby Post is named in Warren's honor. Ceremony to recognize the service of all branches of the service is held at the Boys & Girls Clubs Gym in 2022 before over 500 wreaths were placed on graves of veterans. Wreaths are placed on the graves of nine unknown soldiers who died during the Civil War buried at Sunset Cemetery. WAA QR code to order wreaths.
