October 15 - 21, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 The title of a returning series is accurate, since the character Bosch is continuing to build his legacy. After six seasons of the original mystery series that centered on best-selling novelist Michael Connelly's character Bosch, the detective character returned in the Prime Video sequel; "Bosch: Legacy," which starts its second season Friday, Oct. 20. Played by Titus Welliver, Harry Bosch – a homicide detective turned private eye – has a deeply personal case to handle this time, since he searches for his kidnapped rookie-cop daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz). The drama is based largely on Connelly's book "The Crossing," and Connelly and Welliver are both among its executive producers. Interestingly, "The Crossing" is the 18th book in the Bosch franchise, while Season 1 of "Bosch: Lega- cy" was inspired by two of the novels that came later, "The Wrong Side of Goodbye" (the 19th book) and "The Night Fire" (the 22nd book). The first season ended with a cliffhanger that suggested the abduction of Maddie, who seemed likely to have to testify in a wrongful-death shooting case, for which her police body camera had captured evidence. Maddie works out of the same Los Angeles police station where her father was based during his days as a cop. His frequent employer, attorney Honey "Money" Chandler (Mimi Rogers), trades on her own contacts to try to help him find Maddie before time runs out. Bosch and Chandler have other problems as the saga unfolds, with federal agents taking an interest in them … and definitely not for the purposes of professional camaraderie and cooperation. New cast members in the sophomore round of "Bosch: Legacy" include Anthony Michael Hall ("The Breakfast Club") as one of the FBI investigators, as well as Jessica Camacho ("All Rise"), Max Martini ("The Unit"), David Denman ('The Office") and veteran actor Bruce Davison ("Willard"). Among other co-stars re- turning to the "Bosch" world are Jamie Hector, Gregory Scott Cummins, Troy Evans, Denise Sanchez, Stephen A. Chang, Jacqueline Obradors and David Marciano. For Welliver, the role of Bosch has been the one primarily linking his name and face for many fans, though his acting career dates back more than 30 years. He worked in the law-and-order genre early on, since the shows "NYPD Blue," "L.A. Law," "Murder One" and "Brooklyn South" (all from the stable of producer Steven Bochco) were among his initial credits. "Deadwood," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," several of the "Law & Order" series, "Sons of An- archy" and "The Good Wife" also were significant television jobs for Welliver, whose movies have encom- passed work for director and fellow star Ben Affleck in "The Town" and the Oscar-winning "Argo." Now, with "Bosch: Legacy" (which already has been renewed for a third season), Welliver is back where many of his admirers want him … in a portrayal that viewers and reviewers continue to signal their approval of, if the reception to the sequel show's first stanza is an indication. spotlight BY JAY BOBBIN Denise G. Sanchez and Titus Welliver in "Bosch: Legacy" The 'Legacy' continues: 'Bosch' is back Bella Ainsworth in "Hotel Portofino" Sunday on PBS Q: I've been watching many repeats of "FBI" lately. How long was Missy Peregrym off the show last year? – Steve Cooper, Philadelphia, Pa. A: She was out for the last several episodes of Season 4 in 2022, for a maternity leave for the birth of her second child, and she was written out of the CBS drama temporarily by having her character – Special Agent Maggie Bell – sidelined by exposure to sarin gas. The episode in which that hap- pened comes up fairly frequently in the rotation of repeats shown by ION Television and Pop. (Season 5 has not been part of that package yet.) Peregrym remained absent for the first six stories at the start of the fifth season, during which time Shantel VanSanten continued her guest stint as Special Agent Nina Chase, who served as a member of the team while Maggie was recuperating. The latter character's return was greeted with warm reception by the other characters, mirroring (from what Peregrym told us at the time) the spirited "welcome back" that the actress got from her co-stars. celebritypipeline BY JAY BOBBIN Send questions of general interest via email to tvpipeline@gmail.com.
