He was the son of Cain; yes, the one who killed his brother Abel. He was the father of Methu- selah; yes, the one who lived 969 years. He wrote a self-titled book that was relegated to the Apocrypha, which was surprisingly quot- ed in the New Testament's book of Jude. He was one of only two people who did not die a physical death; the other being Elijah. Yet with all that, his most lasting legacy in the Bible is that he was the man who "walked with God." I have a 100+ pound labradoodle named Oliver. Every morning, weather permitting, I take him for a walk, or more accurately, he takes me for one. Truth be told it's more of an adventure. Oliver stops abruptly at almost every road sign and fi re hydrant to sniff the remains left behind by the previous traveler. He jerks side- ways, taking my shoulder socket along with him, whenever a cat or a squirrel crosses our path. To put it mildly, we are not always in sync. According to the Bible, this is not the type of walk that Enoch took with God. Theirs was seamless. There were no missteps or awkward stops. Enoch and God were in perfect unison with one another. Their footprints could not be identifi ed one from another. The use of the word "walk" in Genesis 5:22 doesn't actually refer to a physical activity but rather to a constant communication between two people — a communication so strong that verbal dialogue is unnecessary. It refers to living a life that seeks always to do the will of God, as if running on autopilot. It refers to an un- breakable covenant between God and an individual. The prophet Amos asked, "Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?" (Amos 3:3). The New Testament instructs believers to "walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16). The meaning of that is to embody the very ways or characteristics of God, which are "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22). To walk with God is to act as God would act. Although Enoch is mentioned both in the Old and New Testa- ments we know very little about the details of his life. We do not know his occupation. We don't know if he constructed any cities or won any battles. There is no fi nancial statement that lists his fi nal net worth. We know only that he was a man that walked with God. Maybe that is all we really need to know. Submitted by Richard Prow "Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?" Amos 3:3 Richard Prow 110 Grigg St., Shelby, NC • (At J.B.
