12 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • September 24 - 30, 2023 "LOKI: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON" With the Marvel Studios adventure-fantasy series' second season soon to begin streaming on Disney+, its six-episode first round – picking up on plot threads from the movie "Avengers: Endgame" – makes its debut on home video. Tom Hiddleston reprises his role from the "Thor" movies as the Norse god's adopted brother, a mischievous troublemaker who's given the chance to help repair the time-and-space continuum, rather than his ceasing to exist at all. He ends up pur- suing Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), a female variation of himself. Owen Wilson also stars as a Time Variance Authority agent who is involved in Loki's case, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sasha Lane, Richard E. Grant and Jonathan Majors also featured. The show is adding recent Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan ("Everything Ev- erywhere All at Once") to its cast for its sophomore season. DVD extras: three "making-of" documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes. *** (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Blu-ray Steelbook and 4K Ultra HD) "I'm nervous about remembering names [on night one at the man- sion]. But really, the much more import- ant thing, I'm really nervous about not finding the right words to carefully let someone down and tell them that they don't have a rose." - Gerry Turner speaking to Variety ahead of "The Golden Bach- elor" premiere "When Fox asked me to host their new show, I was flattered. But then they told me it was about a shady snake oil salesman, and I was a little less flattered to be the guy that immediately comes to mind." - "Snake Oil" host David Spade in a statement prior to the actors' strike BY JAY BOBBIN Family Viewing Ratings AS Adult situations P Profanity V Violence N Nudity GV Graphic Violence "ELEMENTAL" The elements of fire, water, earth and air yield the theme and principal characters of this animated Disney-Pixar feature, witn characters representing different parts of the atmosphere influencing one another as they coexist in the so- called Element City. Leah Lewis ("Nancy Drew") voices the appropriately named Ember, who has a connection with the relatively easy-going Wade (voice of Mamoudou Athie) that awakens each of them to aspects they hadn't considered about their respective existences before. Wendi McLendon-Covey ("The Goldbergs") and Cath - erine O'Hara ("Schitt's Creek") also are heard as characters respectively named, in keeping with the picture's theme, Gale and Brook; the wonderful music score is by Thomas Newman ("Skyfall"). DVD extras: "making-of" documenta- ries; audio commentary by filmmakers; deleted scenes. *** (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR" Patrick Wilson ("The Conjuring") not only re- turns as an actor in this horror sequel, he also di- rected the film, marking his first time in that job. This fifth chapter of the franchise finds Josh (Wil- son) trying to save what's left of his family ties by re-entering the terrifying alternate dimension known as The Further, where he hopes to save his now-college-age son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) from the demon that previously used its power on Josh. The journey takes Josh back through deeply troubling parts of his personal history, though his ex-wife Renai (fellow returnee Rose Byrne) tries to help them save their offspring from a supernatural fate. Leigh Whannell ("Saw"), who created the series and co-wrote this story, also has an acting role here. Genre staple Lin Shaye also reprises her part. DVD extras: two "making-of" documentaries. *** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) "INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE: SEASON 1" Anne Rice's effectively eerie best seller – also the source of a 1994 movie – fuels this series adaptation originally shown by AMC, with Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, the title vampire who recounts his life (and afterlife) to a journalist (Eric Bogosian). He recalls how he became immortal through his association with Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) in early-20th-century New Orleans, and how the relationship between them became complicated by the presence of another of Lestat's disciples, teen Claudia (Bailey Bass). Rae Dawn Chong and John DiMaggio (the voice of Bender on "Futurama") also appear in the project, which is notably rich in atmo- sphere and goes into much more detail about the Louis-and-Lestat connection than the earli- er film did or could. A second season of the show has been ordered. *** (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray) "STAR TREK: PRODIGY – SEASON 1, EPISODES 11-20" Another animated spinoff of the classic sci-fi show, this series met a surprisingly early end (at least for the time being) for an entry from the franchise, since Paramount+ and Nickelodeon canceled it after just this first season. However, a second year that already was well into pro- duction reportedly is being shopped elsewhere The saga brings back Kate Mulgrew to voice a hologram version of her "Star Trek: Voyager" character Capt. Kathryn Janeway, but the show centers around her new trainees, six young aliens who learn about working together (and the workings of Starfleet) while traveling aboard an abandoned ship. The voice cast also includes Brett Gray, Jason Mantzoukas, Ella Purnell and – as the tyrannical Diviner and his enforcer Drednok – John Noble ("Fringe") and Jimmi Simpson ("Westworld"). *** (Not rated: V) (Also on Blu-ray) "THE STING" (4K ULTRA HD) (OCT. 3) "TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS" {OCT. 10} "YELLOWJACKETS: SEASON TWO" (OCT. 10) "THE CROWN: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON" (OCT. 17) "STAR TREK: THE PICARD LEGACY COLLECTION" (OCT. 17) Tom Hiddleston in "Loki" Robert Earl Jones and Robert Redford in "The Sting" Solution on page 19
