July 30 - August 5, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 Each August brings a special event back to Turner Classic Movies, and it's particularly special for fans of the performers it showcases. This year's edition of "Summer Under the Stars" gets under way Tuesday, Aug. 1, with the month again highlighting the work of a different actor or actress each day. The TCM hosts – Ben Mankewicz, Alicia Malone, Dave Karger, Jacqueline Stewart and Eddie Muller – will appear at different times through- out the month to introduce many of the films and offer facts about the star whose day it is. The first person highlighted this time is Lucille Ball, and the lineup also features such TCM staples as Debbie Reynolds (Aug. 6), Alan Ladd (Aug. 11), Paul Newman (Aug. 13), Greer Garson (Aug. 14), Bob Hope (Aug. 17), Fred Astaire (Aug. 19), Barbara Stanwyck (Aug. 20), James Stewart (Aug. 23), Ernest Borgnine (Aug. 25), Doris Day (Aug. 26), Humphrey Bogart (Aug. 27) and Sophia Loren (Aug. 30). Those stars have been given "Summer Under the Stars" salutes previously, but every year, TCM's programmers also work in several entertainers for the first time. There are several such personalities in this round, and here's a look at them. Anthony Perkins (Aug. 2): Alfred Hitchcock's "Psy- cho" (1960) expectedly is a major attraction of this day centered on the actor who remains iconic for his portrayal of motel keeper Norman Bates. Stella Stevens (Aug. 3): The actress, who died last February, is remembered in a tribute day that includes her teaming with Elvis Presley in "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (1962). Jackie Cooper (Aug. 4): The child star who grew into an adult career as an actor-director is seen in "The Champ" (1931) among other features. The Nicholas Brothers (Aug. 9): The dancing siblings are seen both individually and together over the course of a schedule that encompasses "Stormy Weather" (1943). Rhonda Fleming (Aug. 10): On what would have been her 100th birthday, the legendary red- head is seen in titles ranging from "Out of the Past" (1947) to "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (1949). Katy Jurado (Aug. 16): "High Noon" (1952), which brought her a Golden Globe Award, and "Broken Lance" (1954) – the latter of which made her the first Latin American actress nom- inated for an Oscar – will be among the movies shown to spotlight Jurado's talent. Geraldine Chaplin (Aug. 22): "Doctor Zhiva- go" (1965), including arguably the best-known performance by the actress whose father was cinema icon Charles "Charlie" Chaplin, will be a sizable part of this day. John Carradine (Aug. 31): Taking "Summer Under the Stars" out on a "new" note is a mar- athon of movies with the patriarch of an acting dynasty, the father of fellow actors David, Keith, Robert and Bruce. (Actresses Ever Carradine and Martha Plimpton also are family members.) John's films shown here include the original version of "Stagecoach" (1939) and the much-lauded "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940). spotlight BY JAY BOBBIN Anthony Perkins in "Psycho" It's a 'Summer Under the Stars' again on TCM Kristen Johnston and Steve Zahn in "The Righteous Gemstones" Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Along with the many other services, programs and amenities Signature HealthCARE offers Physical Therapy in PRIVATE Rehab Rooms.
