July 23 - 29, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 For one night this month, Turner Classic Movies is making "Christmas in July" more than just a phrase. The channel offers a night of yuletide films Tuesday, July 25, stretching into early the following morning with features that typically show up on TCM each Decem- ber. In climates that are quite warm at this time of year, the snowy scenes may come as relief at least visually, and they might even inspire some way-early holiday shop- ping. In any event, here's a look at the five included attractions, in the order they'll be shown. "Christmas in Connecticut" (1945): One of Barbara Stanwyck's most popular films casts her as one of her most accessible characters, an unmarried cosmopolitan food journalist who has made up her print image as a country-flavored family woman. Her publisher (Sydney Greenstreet) has bought into the ruse, putting the writer to the test when the boss wants her to stage a comfy holiday at home for a newly returned soldier (Dennis Morgan) who's a big fan of her columns. "Holiday Affair" (1949): Robert Mitchum largely was doing dark or vio- lent projects– and had made controversial headlines for a drug arrest – when he got the chance to change things up by playing a Christmas-season store salesman who strikes up a relationship with a widow and her son (Janet Leigh, Gordon Gebert). Things get a lot more complicated, though, thanks in part to the attorney (Wendell Corey). "It Happened on 5th Avenue" (1945): In an Oscar-nominated story, a hobo (Vic- tor Moore) – who has been "borrowing" a wealthy man's (Charles Ruggles) posh New York residence while the latter is out of town – shares the site with a displaced ex-soldier and an apparent teen runaway (Don DeFore, Gale Storm). The place gets increasingly crowded as a couple of the military veteran's war buddies (Alan Hale Jr., alias "Gilligan's Island's" Skipper, and Edward Ryan) and the teenag- er's mother (Ann Harding) also arrive. "A Christmas Carol" (1938): Any movie festival that truly wants to be a "Christmas in July" is smart to include at least one of the many screen versions of the Charles Dickens tale about arguably fiction's ulti- mate miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. There had been several editions of various lengths by the time Reginald Owen made the lead role his own here, though it was intended for Lionel Barrymore (who dropped out for health reasons). "In the Good Old Summertime" (1949): Despite the title, Christmas has a big pres- ence in this classic musical that uses the very familiar plot of co-workers disliking each other on the job … not realizing that they're also each other's secret pen pal. Judy Garland and Van Johnson have those roles, with Buster Keaton both a co-star and an adviser on some of the picture's sight gags. spotlight BY JAY BOBBIN Dennis Morgan and Barbara Stanwyck in "Christmas in Connecticut" TCM celebrates Christmas in July Zeljko Ivanek in "The Walking Dead: Dead City" Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Along with the many other services, programs and amenities Signature HealthCARE offers Physical Therapy in PRIVATE Rehab Rooms.
