Brainerd Dispatch • July 9 - 15, 2023 •19 "CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair" The new documentary special "CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair," premiering on Hulu Wednesday, July 5, cel- ebrates CMA Fest's humble beginnings, as told through exclusive one-on-one interviews, never-before-seen archival footage and CMA Fest performances. The film follows the festival from its humble beginnings as a Fan Fair in 1972, when it drew 5,000 fans to the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, through its move to the Tennes- see State Fairgrounds in 1982 and its final big move to downtown Nashville in 2001, as an event that now draws 80,000 fans a day for four music and fun-filled days. "The Quiet Girl" (2022) The debut film from writer-director Colm Bairéad, "The Quiet Girl" will be available to stream on Hulu as of Friday, July 7. The picture follows the life of a quiet, ne- glected girl named Cáit (newcomer Catherine Clinch), who is growing up in rural Ireland during the early 1980s. After she is sent away from her dysfunctional family for a summer spent with a foster family – Seán (Andrew Bennett, "The Bachelor Weekend," 2013) and Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley, "Fair City") Cinnsealach – Cáit slowly discovers a new way of being and her personality blossoms as she grows comfortable with her new, temporary parents. As the summer progresses, however, young Cáit soon learns that even in a home where honesty is praised above all, every family has secrets of its own. "Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire" Experience the creativity and powerful storytelling of a new wave of animation stars in the action-packed new Disney+ animated sci-fi anthology "Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire," when it premieres Wednesday, July 5. The series brings together the visions of different animators to present distinct, futuristic visions from Africa across 10 short films. Inspired by the continent's diverse histories and cultures, "these action-packed sci- fi and fantasy stories present bold visions of advanced technology, aliens, spirits and monsters imagined from uniquely African perspectives" (per Disney+). Execu- tive produced by Academy Award-winning director Peter Ramsey ("Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," 2018), "Generation Fire" features films from creators Shofela Coker ("Moremi"), Tafadzwa Hove and Pi- ous Nyenyewa ("Mukudzei"), Raymond Malinga ("Herderboy"), Terrence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane ("Hatima"), Spoek Mathambo and Terence Neale ("Surf Sangoma"), Tshepo Moche ("First Totem Prob- lems"), Ng'endo Mukii ("Enkai"), Simangaliso 'Panda' Sibaya and Malcolm Wope ("Mkhuzi: The Masked Racer"), Ahmed Teilab ("Stardust") and Lesego Vorster ("You Give Me Heart"). "SharkFest" Four weeks of shark-infested television shows and pre- mieres begins Sunday, July 2, as part of National Geo- graphic's "SharkFest" programming slate. This year, the content will be available to watch ocean-to-ocean, as every "SharkFest" premiere will be available to stream immediately on Disney+ (and Hulu), in tandem with its network television roll-out. This years' festivities kick off with a slate of new shows premiering on the first day of the event (July 2nd), including: "Bull Shark Bandits," following as biologists investigate the rising reports of bull sharks stealing from fishermen around Northern Australia; "Return of the White Shark," look- ing at the increasing white shark population in Cape Cod, Mass.; "Bull Shark vs. Hammerhead," in which experts weigh in on a recently captured video of bull sharks attacking a great hammerhead; and "Sharkano: Hawaii," which explores why the tiger shark may be drawn to Hawaii's volcanoes. Programming from previ- ous years of "SharkFest" will also be available, includ- ing: "Shark Attack Files," which according to a press release from Disney, is "the best of every shark story you've ever experienced. From terrifying encounters and incredible feats to gang warfare and alien inva- sions, each episode is a wall-to-wall shark invasion." The series features footage from real-life shark attacks and interactions, while also highlighting some bizarre, mysterious shark behavior. "The Horror of Dolores Roach" - Season 1 Prime Video's newest horror-comedy series, "The Hor- ror of Dolores Roach," premieres on the streaming platform Friday, July 7. Based on the hit Spotify podcast series of the same name, this series is "a contemporary, Sweeney Todd-inspired urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, cannibalism and survival of the fittest in New York City" (per Prime Video). It follows Dolores Roach (Justina Machado, "Six Feet Under") as she is released from an unjust prison sentence after 16 years and returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with her old friend Luis (Alejandro Hernandez, "New Amsterdam"), who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. But, when the promise of her newfound stabil- ity is quickly threatened, Dolores finds herself going to shocking extremes to survive. From creator, writer and executive producer Aaron Mark ("Commentary," 2012), who originally developed the story as a one- woman play called "Empanada Loca" and who direct- ed the original podcast, "The Horror of Dolores Roach also stars Kita Updike ("The Misandrists," 2017), K. Todd Freeman ("The Cider House Rules ," 1999), Marc Maron ("Maron"), Judy Reyes ("Scrubs"), Jean Yoon ("Kim's Convenience"), Jeffery Self ("Search Party") and Ilan Eskenazi ("Deal," 2022). "Tár" (2022) With six Academy Award-nominations to its name, 2022's musical and unique psychological drama, "Tár," is now available to stream on Prime Video. The film stars Cate Blanchett ("Carol," 2015) as the titular Lydia Tár, a world-renowned musical conductor (currently, the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic), who, as the story unfolds, finds herself facing harsh accusations of abuse and misconduct, partly involving the death of a former student. Her professional life unravels quickly, and so does her personal life, as her wife, Sharon (Nina Hoss, "Phoenix," 2014) restricts access to their adopted daughter, furious to hear of Lydia's behavior. Meanwhile, Lydia finds herself facing odd and surreal nightmares, vivid hallucinations, random bouts of pain, and worst of all, an increasing sensitivity to sound, inhibiting her ability to compose and disrupting her perfect pitch. Odd sounds pierce her mind, as they do the audience's. Tense and unrelenting from start to finish, the film also stars Noémie Merlant ("Portrait of a Lady on Fire," 2019), Sydney Lemmon ("Helstrom"), Mark Strong ("1917," 2019) and newcomer Nicolas Hopchet. "The Out- Laws" (2023) Saddle up for a gunslinging urban adventure with the new Netflix action comedy "The Out-Laws," premiering Friday, July 7. The film stars Adam Devine ("Workaholics") as Owen Browning, a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker (Nina Dobrev, "The Vampire Diaries"). But when his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he suspects that his future in-laws, Billy (Pierce Brosnan, "Tomorrow Never Dies," 1997) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin, "Animal Kingdom"), who just arrived in town, are the outlaws in question. From director Tyler Spindel ("The Wrong Missy," 2020) and writers Evan Turner ("Journey to the Center of the Earth," 2008) and Ben Zazove ("Sherlock Gnomes," 2018), "The Out-Laws" is produced by Devine, Allen Covert ("Hustle," 2022) and Adam Sandler ("Murder Mystery 2," 2023). Lauren Lapkus ("Good Girls"), Michael Rooker ("Guardians of the Galaxy," 2014), Poorna Jagannathan ("Never Have I Ever"), Richard Kind ("Argo," 2012), Julie Hagerty ("Airplane!," 1980), Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out," 2017) and Blake Anderson ("Workaholics") also star. "WHAM!" (2023) Wake up and get ready to go-go: the new documentary "WHAM!" premieres on Netflix Wednesday, July 5. In 1982, best-of-friends teenagers George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley set out to conquer the world as Wham! — and by June 1986 they played their very last gig at Wembley Stadium, having done exactly that. The amazing story of how they dominated the charts around the world with timeless and classic pop songs — including "Club Tropicana," "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Freedom," "I'm Your Man" and, of course, "Last Christmas" — in just four years, is told for the very first time and in their own words. The film includes unprecedented access to both George and An - drew's personal archives, including never-before-seen footage alongside rare, candid and previously unheard interviews, as the documentary charts their incredible journey from school friends to superstars. Directed by Chris Smith ("Tiger King"), this feature-length documentary is produced by John Battsek ("Listen to Me Marlon," 2015) and Simon Halfon ("All You Need Is Me").
