His film "Noelle" starred Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect," 2012) and Bill Hader ("Barry") as the children of Santa Claus, who are asked to take over the family business when the man in red re- tires. It was just as lightly comedic as Lawrence's other films, but with less romance — it focused on fam- ily dynamics instead. Four years have passed since then without a followup, which could seem like a lot for another di- rector. But with as much as five years passing between his films in the past, his next one isn't techni- cally overdue yet. "Noelle" was released directly to Disney+, so there are no box of- fice numbers to measure its suc- cess, and its reviews were mid- dling. But Kendrick got excellent reviews, so another pairing is cer- tainly not out of the question. Q: When is "Avenue 5" com- ing back? A: The show, like the ship it's named after, is never coming back. "Avenue 5," the darkly comic HBO sci-fi sitcom about an outer space cruise ship that was strand- ed away from Earth, was can- celled earlier this year after two seasons. You can chalk this one up to pandemic interruptions. It debuted in January 2020, and HBO was so enthusiastic that it renewed the show for a second season a month later. Then lockdowns brought the industry to a halt. It was two years before the second season finally made it to air, and the much weaker ratings suggested that people had for- gotten about "Avenue 5" in the interim. Add the fact that the cast mem- bers' deals were lapsing at that point, meaning many had already booked new gigs, and the show just couldn't survive. It's sad to think that we'll never get to see the ship return home, but, honestly, we were probably never going to. The show made an ongoing joke out of raising the characters' hopes of salvation just to dash them again — usually due to their own dumb mistakes.
