Such is the case for a select few lucky contenders this year as "West Side Story" (2021) actress and Broadway star Ari- ana DeBose returns to host the 76th annual Tony Awards for a second consecutive year. The ceremony airs live from United Palace in New York City's Washington Heights Sunday, June 11, on CBS and Para- mount+. A reborn classic leads the nominations for the 2022- 2023 pool, which is presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. "Some Like It Hot," a new ad- aptation of the 1959 film of the same name starring Marilyn Monroe ("The Seven Year Itch," 1955), Tony Curtis ("Sparta- cus," 1960) and Jack Lemmon ("Grumpy Old Men," 1993) — which was, in turn, an adapta- tion of the 1935 French film "Fanfare of Love" — has earned a total of 11 nomina- tions at this year's awards, in- cluding Best Book of a Musical (for Matthew López and Amber Ruffin), Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (for music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (for both Christian Borle and J. Harrison Ghee), and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (for Scott Pask), among others. Other big nominees this year — all with nine nods apiece — include the highly acclaimed and often discussed "& Juliet," a "jukebox musical" that rei- magines Juliet's story and takes a look at what her life could have been if she hadn't thrown it all away for Romeo; "Shucked," following "an un- likely hero, an unscrupulous con man and a battle for the heart & soil of a small town" (per ShuckedMusical.com); "New York, New York," a post- war ode to the City That Never Sleeps, loosely based on the 1977 film of the same name; and, with eight nominations, "Kimberly Akimbo," the "story of a teenager who has a medi- cal condition that causes her to age rapidly" (according to Vari- ety). Talent rains outside the mu- sical sphere as well, especially when taking into consideration highly nominated stage plays such as the Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty," 2012) -led "A Doll's House," adapted by Amy Herzog from the original by Henrik Ibsen; the Lee Daniels ("The Butler," 2013) -backed comedy "Ain't No Mo'," which sadly closed during the winter of 2022 after 28 performances; and Tom Stoppard's "Leopold- stadt," a "humane and heart- breaking" play set in the Jew- ish quarter of Vienna, Austria, at the turn of the 20th century. All of the listed plays are tied at six nominations, with "Ain't No Mo'" and "Leopoldstadt" run- ning against "Between River- side and Crazy," "Cost of Liv- ing" and "Fat Ham" in the Best Play category. Of course, one of the biggest stories this year has been whether the Tonys would take place at all. As of May 2, the Writers Guild of America has been on strike, fighting for better wages and measures amid rising infla- tion. According to Forbes.com, "nearly 98% voted in favor of this strike, and the stakes are higher than ever." The article continued, "WGA members are fighting for better pay, stream- ing residuals, mandatory staff- ing, employment duration and AI technology safeguards." Amid the WGA strike, several shows have gone into filming hiatus and many release dates for new and returning shows have been pushed back to ac- commodate for the grievances. Among the delayed and can- celed awards shows are the Daytime Emmy Awards (post- poned to an unspecified date), the Peabody Awards (canceled) and the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which aired via pre- taped broadcast following host Drew Barrymore's ("50 First Dates," 2004) decision to step down and stand in solidarity with the writers. The Tony Awards committee, which has been in charge of the American institution since 1947, initially canceled the cer- emony Friday, May 12, after weighing its options in the wake of a week of WGA strike. Several meetings later, a deci- sion was made to proceed with the awards despite WGA sup- port. "As has been previously re- ported, the Writers Guilds of America East and West will not negotiate an interim agree- ment or a waiver for the Tony Awards," read the WGA's offi- cial statement. "However, Tony Awards Productions ... has communicated with us that they are altering this year's show to conform with specific requests from the WGA, and therefore the WGA will not be picketing the show." Don't miss a second of the 76th Tony Awards when the event celebrates all "525,600 minutes" of last year on Broad- way. The ceremony begins live Sunday, June 11, after the "Act One" pre-show on CBS and is also available to stream on Par- amount+.
