May 14 - 20, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 One of the seminal sports comedies of the 1990s gets a modern retake in a fea- ture-length movie coming to Hulu. In "White Men Can't Jump," a remake of the original 1992 comedy that debuts Friday, May 19, rapper Jack Harlow makes his film acting debut as Jeremy, a former star player whose career was cut short by injuries, who winds up crossing paths with Kamal (Sinqua Walls,"Teen Wolf ") a once-promising player who caused his own demise in the sport. As in the original film starring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, there is plenty of trash talking and humorous barbs being traded here as the two polar-opposite Los Angeles streetballers join forces to win pick- up games and money and face down their personal challenges, learning that they have more in common than they thought along the way. Directed by Calmatic ("House Party"), the film also stars Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Vince Staples, Myles Bullock and Lance Red- dick in one of his final performances before his death in March 2023. Of course, basketball has used as a back- drop or a catalyst for storylines in film. The following are a few of the better ones you can stream right now. "Hoosiers" (Prime Video, Spectrum): Gene Hackman shined as a coach with a checkered past who joins forces with the town drunk (an Oscar-nominated Dennis Hooper) to train a small-town Indiana high school basketball team to contend for the state championship in this well-received 1986 drama. Fun fact: Hackman expected the film to bomb but after viewing a rough cut, said to director David Anspaugh, "'How the hell did you do that?" "White Men Can't Jump" (Hulu): Well, of course. Harrelson and Snipes looked and sounded like the real thing when they played L.A. streetballers in director Ron Shelton's entertaining 1992 comedy. Harrelson, in fact, prided himself on his skill as a player in college. But after being invited to play one- on-one against former NBA great Bob Lani- er, a consultant on the film, he called it "the most embarrassing 15 minutes of my life." "Coach Carter" (Pluto): Thomas Car- ter (no relation) directed this fine 2005 drama based on the true story of Ken Car- ter (played here by Samuel L. Jackson), a California high-school basketball coach who caused controversy in 1999 when he suspended his undefeated team due to bad grades. Channing Tatum, who had never played basketball before, made his film debut here.
