Brown arrested after high speed chase reaching 124 mph By Andy Heuring A rural Velpen man was arrested on mul- tiple charges after police said he fled from them at 124 mph on April 29. Cody Brown, 28, of 9360 E. CR200S, Vel- pen was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a level 6 felony; reckless driving, a class C misde- meanor; criminal recklessness, a class B misdemeanor. Pike County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dal- las Killian in a probable cause affidavit said he was on patrol at about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, when he heard State Police traffic about a pursuit that started in Newburgh and they had lost the white Dodge Charger with a temporary license plate that had headed north I-69 and was last seen exciting onto Highway 57 still headed north. Killian continued that a Warrick County Deputy had a picture of the license plate and that the Charger was driving 110 mph in a 35 mph zone. Killian said Warrick County called Pike's Dispatch and said an officer had checked the plate and found it was registered to Brown. Killian Sheriff's Sgt. Jared Simmons was riding with him and they went to Gibson- Pike line on State Road 64. Deputy Killian said when he arrived the Pike-Gibson line they were advised a Gibson County deputy had lost contact with the vehicle. Killian said he and Simmons saw the vehicle com- ing up from behind them and then saw it go by at a high rate of speed. Killian in the affidavit said they could see it had a tem- porary plate. Killian said he turned on his emergency lights and attempted to pursue it, but by the time they reached CR50E they could no longer keep sigh of the vehicle. "The suspect vehicle was traveling at speed over 124 mph, passing on double yellow and did not stop for the four-way intersection at SR64 and SR61," stated Killian in the affi- davit. Killian said it was the fastest he had ever seen a vehicle drive on a state road. They lost sight of the vehicle at CR300E on SR64 however said they could tell the vehicle turned onto SR257 from Highway 64 by skids marks on the road. Killian and Simmons went north on Highway 257 and at 900E they saw the driver lost control of the vehicle and almost missed the turn. Deputy Kane Osgatharp arrived at Brown's residence the same time as Killian and Simmons. "In the driveway you could see skid marks in the gavel where the suspect ve- hicle pulled into the drive at a high rate of speed and then backed into the garage in an attempt to conceal the temporary li- cense plate from view," stated Killian. He added the vehicle was still visible from a side door of the garage. Two Indiana State Police Troopers, an Oakland City unite and Warrick County Sheriff's Office Sgt. arrived. Killian said Warrick Co. Sgt. Matthew Liddle had talked to him earlier and called him again. Killian said Brown told police he was no longer home, but had gone to a friend's home. Killian asked for the address of where Brown was and he would not give them the address. Killian told Brown po- lice were requesting a search warrant for the residence. He said Brown said it was his mother's residence and they would have to talk to her. Killian said Brown's mother turned into the drive while he was talking with Brown. She immediately gave police permis- sion to search the residence. Killian said he asked Brown's mom if she would call Brown and tell him to come out rather than police having to come in and get him. Killian said she called Brown and eventu- ally Brown came out the front door with his hands up. Killian said Brown's speech was slurred and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. Brown said when police went into the garage "even though the vehicle had been sitting an extended amount of time the hood of the vehicle was still hot to the touch." Brown was taken into custody and trans- ported to the Pike County Jail. Thomas Cannon Chad Hayes Christina Spaulding Kayla Cropper Kevin Acton Lacy Drew Laura Leighty This could have been your ad!
