Someone You Should Know Gwen Dunn, of Amber Manor By Lowell Thomas Correspondent news@pressdispatch.net This week we are bringing you Gwen Dunn as Someone You Should Know. Gwen has lived in Pike County all of her life. Gwen is Commu- nity Service Representative for Amber Manor. She does Marketing and admission work along with visiting many of the senior centers to explain to them what services are available at Amber Manor. On the sec- ond Thursday of each month she puts out a meal for the seniors who choose to hear a presentation on any number of topics which should help we seniors enjoy our lives more fully. When asked if she was in- volved in any organizations which helped Pike County and the citizens of the coun- ty. She said she was a board member of Pike County Chamber board, a member of Ruritan club, a Dementia Friendly Petersburg com- mittee member, and a board member of the Blue Jeans Center in Monroe City. Dunn told about a lady who visited Petersburg who had brought her road show which shared why people who are suffering from de- mentia would possibly do some of the things which we don't understand. This lady was Teepa Snow and she is well known around the Unit- ed States for her work and knowledge of Dementia. In her spare time, Dunn laughed and remarked that it sounded like she might attend a board meeting somewhere. Dunn is the mother of two daughters and her eldest is fondly referred to as her "mini-me." Her youngest daughter is on the cheer squad and is in competi- tive dance. Something people may not know about Dunn is that she considers herself a tra- ditionalist. Dunn's opinion is if there is normally a meal cooked on special days, it is cooked no matter how many are there to eat it, and a hand written note sent to you is much more personal than an email. Should you have the op- portunity to meet Dunn, you will soon see she is a person who truly cares for others and she is a service devoted individual. Gwen Dunn is someone you should know. Gwen Dunn, of Amber Manor From the desk of Patoka Fire Chief Brandon Truitt First off I want to congrat- ulate students who complet- ed the Emergency medical responder class. Students and instructors volunteered several weeks of their time with classroom and hands on skills. These students are now state certified as EMR's and will be able to provide basic patient care. Monday around 10 p.m. Patoka responded to a vehi- cle fire in Winslow. Fire was a small Bobcat skid steer. Owners were settling in for the night when they noticed the fire and reported it to 911. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the skid steer fully involved, unfortunately it was severely damaged by fire. With the weather warm- ing up, more families are getting together and having cookouts and camping. Here are a few tips to make camp fires safer. SAFETY AROUND THE FIRE • Before setting up a campfire, be sure it is per- mitted. Check with your lo- cal fire department. • If campfires are per- mitted, they need to be at least 25 feet away from any structure and anything that can burn. • Clear away dry leaves and sticks, overhanging low branches and shrubs. • Avoid burning on windy, dry days. It is easier for open burning to spread out of con- trol when it is windy and dry. • Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire. • Attend to the campfire at all times. A campfire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a damag- ing fire. • Keep a campfire small which is easier to control. • Never use gasoline or other flammable or combus- tible liquids. • A bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand near- by to put out the fire. Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site. • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll. Stop, drop to the ground and cov- er your face with your hands. Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out. • Treat a burn right away. Cool the burn with cool wa- ter for 3 to 5 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth. Get medical help if needed. Roast with Care If roasting marshmallows, help young children. Never shake a roasting marshmal- low. It can turn into a flying, flaming ball. A heated metal skewer can cause burns. Brandon Truitt, Chief The Petersburg Police Department would like to con- gratulate Benjamin Hess. After a long 15 weeks he grad- uated the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (SWILEA). We look forward to Ben going on patrol in Petersburg and serving our community. Congrats Ben! From left to right, Sergeant Paul Collier, Officer Benja- min Hess and Chief Kyle Mills. Petersburg Police Department welcomes new officer Pike County Sheriff's Department welcomes new deputy We would like to congratulate Chase Dotterweich on his graduation from the Southwest Indiana Law Enforce- ment Academy(SWILEA).
