(3rd Part of "Easter" Series) Turn on the TV and you will see the gross darkness that is covering our world. The con- stant message of gloom and doom is proclaimed many times a day over the airways. Fear and despair fill many hearts because of the trouble and devastation. Indeed, we don't even have to watch televi- sion to spot darkness trying to creep into our communities, show up at our addresses, and push its way into our homes. Yet, despite the darkness intertwined within humanity, Jesus is the Light of the world. John 12:46 (NIV) "I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in dark- ness." He came into the world to bring the light, but commissions believers to shine the light. In Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV), he states, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." What is the purpose of Light? • Light dispels darkness. • Light reveals truth. • Light heals the hurting. • Light is full of good works. How can we shine the light when the dark- ness is overwhelming and intimidating? 1. IDENTIFY YOUR IDENTITY Look into the mirror? What do you see? Do you see what God sees? The darkness tries to blind us to who we are in Christ! However, throughout scripture are details of our iden- tity. • You are created in the image and likeness of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) • You are a child of God. (Galatians 3:26) • You are the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13) • You are God's masterpiece. He has cre- ated us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10) 2. RECEIVE FROM GOD'S PRES- ENCE Open the manual - the Bible. Learn it's instructions, and receive enlightenment and power from the Holy Spirit. In other words, spend time with the Lord in prayer unto you are filled with the Spirit and boldness to do the work of the Lord. (Acts 4:31) 3. DON'T LET ANYTHING STOP YOU FROM SHINING THE LIGHT! A hurting world desperately needs people who know their God and are yielded to him. People, regardless of their own personal prob- lems, are standing firm in the faith and are always working enthusiastically for the Lord. (I Corinthians 15:58) PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Father God, I praise you because you are Light, and there isn't any darkness in you at all. Thank you for being my light and my sal- vation - I will not fear. You are the fortress of my life, protecting me from danger – I will not be afraid. Help me to shine the light of Christ to those around me that they can experience your love, truth, and power. In Jesus' name I pray - Amen." Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you! Contact her at www.danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her to speak. Shine the Light DANYALE PATTERSON Communties in Schools of Cleveland County to host second annual Oyster Roast Continuing the tradition of last year's in- augural event, Communities In Schools of Cleveland County (CIS) is looking forward to hosting their second annual Oyster Roast at Spinning Leaf at The Vineyard on Thursday, April 27, beginning at 6:30. With a meal by platinum sponsor Dressing on the Side, the menu will feature options for everyone: oysters, shrimp, smoked chicken, potato bar, salad bar, and dessert. Tickets will include one drink, and a cash bar will be avail- able through the venue. The laid back, indoor/outdoor event will also include live music with special guest Kevin Dedmon, a silent auction, and a raffl e for a collection of board members' favorite wines. A unique local offering kicked off in 2022, the evening creates an opportunity for fellow- ship while supporting programming for vulner- able students in Cleveland County. CIS Pres- ident and Chief Executive Offi cer Heather Bridges Moore says the organization's board is thrilled to offer the event, as it not only pro- vides a fun environment for socializing, but it also creates a platform for awareness related to the needs of local students that sometimes go unnoticed. Many Cleveland County residents may be unaware of the signifi cant challenges facing local students, like trauma and a lack of sup- port at home that is expressed through behav- ior and poor school attendance and ultimately affects academic performance. "Our organiza- tion's role is to provide in-school and after-school services to those students who need extra sup- port. We dig in to fi nd the barriers that may be going unnoticed, and we strive to mitigate them – whether it's fi nding a student a safe place to sleep at night or provid- ing school supplies and hygiene products to increase their preparedness and confi dence, we are here to help keep kids in school, what- ever it takes." Bridges Moore says. Want to Attend? Tickets are $60 each or 2/$100 and can be purchased at cisofclevelandco.org/events. Ta- bles for eight are $500 and include a char- cuterie board. Festive coastal attire is encour- aged but not required. For more information, call Communities In Schools of Cleveland County at 704-480-5569. The National Cancer Institute estimated that, in 2020, roughly 1.9 million new cases of cancer would be diagnosed and more than 606,000 people would die from the disease. The most common cancers include breast, lung, prostate, colon, melanoma, and bladder cancers. Even the healthiest people are not immune to these dis- eases. However, there are ways for people to reduce their risk for vari- ous cancers. 1. Skip tobacco prod- ucts. Avoiding tobacco in all forms can greatly reduce a person's risk of developing cancer. Smoking is a major contributor to various cancers, including lung and bladder cancers. 2. Exercise regularly. Exer- cise benefits the body in vari- ous ways, including reducing a person's risk for various types of cancers. The American In- stitute for Cancer Research recommends exercising for at least 45 minutes per day. This doesn't have to mean a hard workout at the gym. Moderate exercise through gardening, dancing, playing with children, or walking the dog are suffi- cient forms of exercise. 3. Lose weight in a healthy way. The American Cancer Society says obesity and being overweight have been linked to increased risk for breast, colon, esophageal, endometrial, and pancreatic cancers. Fat and sugar me- tabolism may be mechanisms implicating weight in cancer occurrence. Skip the fad diets and lose weight through por- tion control, a balance of healthy foods and exercise. 4. Limit alcohol consump- tion. Excessive alcohol con- sumption increases the risk of cancers to the breast, esophagus, mouth, and lar- ynx. Harvard Medical School recommends that those who choose to drink limit alcohol their consumption to no more than one drink per day. 5. Reduce consumption of animal fats. Verywell Health notes that studies point to a diet high in animal fat as a contributor to increased risk of certain cancers. Red meat is a particular concern. 6. Avoid radiation expo- sure. Opt for medical imaging tests only when they are ab- solutely necessary. Radon in a home is a factor in cancer causation, so homeowners should periodically test their homes for radon. In addi- tion, sunscreen and avoiding the sun during certain times of day, such as between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., can reduce exposure to po- tentially harmful UV rays. 7. Prioritize safe behaviors. Certain viruses can cause cancer, including Epstein-Barr and human papillomavirus. Hepatitis and HIV also can in- crease a person's risk for can- cer. Practicing safe sex and avoiding illegal drug use can lower the risk of getting cancer from infectious diseases. Cancer continues to be a leading cause of death and affects millions of people. By examining their behaviors and lifestyles, people can make changes that reduce their risk for various cancers. 7 strategies to prevent cancer
