During your time at the Arboretum and Botanic Garden, you can stop by Norrie's Gift & Garden Shop to get a souvenir. From gifts to plants, you will find something to your liking. "It's full of plants to purchase that we propagate ourselves from our existing plant collections," says Copp. "This means we special- ize in plants native to Mediterranean climates from around the world. We have Leucosper- mums from South Africa, Banksias from Australia, Succulents from Mexico, and a vibrant collection of California native plants for sale," she says. Plus, since these come from Mediterranean climates, they are well suited to thrive in our climate and don't need excessive watering. "They are unusual, beautiful, easy to grow, and great for the water-wise times we are living in," she adds. "The gift shop is also full of garden-themed gifts that feature works from local artists. We pride ourselves on being local– our plants are grown in-house and many of the gifts we sell are made by members in our community. We have forged priceless relation- ships with local artisans." Customers are welcome to come to the shop any- time, even if they are not visiting the Arboretum. Interested in vol- unteering? Seniors are welcome; in fact, Norrie's really needs more volunteers right now, but if you prefer something else there are also positions avail- able including weeding and helping run events. "Volunteering at Norrie's Gift & Garden Shop and at the Arboretum in general is an extremely rewarding experience for people of all ages," says Copp. "Since we are on the UCSC campus, we have a lot of students who volunteer in the gift shop and in our volunteer weeding groups. Many of our non-student volunteers are former UCSC students who were on campus when the school opened in the 1960s. Volunteering is a great way for student volunteers and volunteers from the community to cross-pollinate and share stories and experienc- es across generational divides. Being at the Arboretum is an amazing way to connect with the plants and environment, but also connects us with each other through the plants. Volunteering is a wonderful way to build relationships and enjoy nature." Quigley and Copp encourage locals to visit soon. "Bring coffee or lunch and enjoy one of our many picnic tables and garden benches," says Copp. "Or bring your camera or binocu- lars and a nature journal. Or simply come to relax and enjoy a stroll through the peaceful gardens. The Arboretum is a Santa Cruz jewel, and we are here for you."
