SHILILAH R AE GLADISH shililah rae Gladish, 68, of Petersburg, passed away on the evening of March 9, 2023, with her family at her bedside, at Providence healthcare, in Terre haute. she was born on March 4, 1955, in Oakland city, to rod- ney and Bettye (hays) Mc- candless. she graduated from Winslow high school in 1973, and then attended classes at Vincennes University, study- ing art. she met James W. Gladish II on February 20, 1976 and they had their first date on February 22, 1976. The pair knew they were meant for each other immedi- ately, and they were married on august 21, 1976. shortly af- ter the marriage, the young couple moved to Paoli. during their time there, she worked at a grocery store and then Wabash, a computer disc man- ufacturer. she and Jim's first child, Jason, was born in Paoli on december 9, 1981. she and Jim returned to Petersburg af- ter five years away. Their sec- ond child, Jodi Lynn was born on June 18, 1985, followed by a second daughter, Julie Ma- rie, who was born on august 2, 1988. Julie passed away in infancy on september 2, 1988. It was at this heartbreaking time that she was diagnosed with myotonic muscular dys- trophy which was the cause of the loss of little Julie. regard- less of the disease, she con- tinued working diligently as a homemaker and a stay-at- home mother. she absolutely loved her role in life and was so very proud of her family. she was a kind, loving, won- derful spouse and mother. she enjoyed crocheting, and truly loved to cook. she was always on the lookout for new recipes and had amassed quite a col- lection of cookbooks. Before getting married, her mother and grandmother had always done the majority of the cook- ing, so she had very little ex- perience. some of her initial attempts were questionable, according to her husband. On occasion he wasn't sure that she wasn't trying to poison him, but she became an excel- lent cook through the years of effort and experience. Jim will be the first to attest to this. Over time the muscu- lar dystrophy gradually pro- gressed, and eventually left her wheelchair bound for the most part. This didn't keep her out of the kitchen though, and she certainly did not slow down. her children, Jason and Jodi, helped her in the kitchen and benefited from her cook- ing expertise. Myotonic dys- trophy causes the afflicted to be more susceptible to re- spiratory illnesses. although she had fought hard and sur- vived pneumonia more than once over the past ten years, she contracted covid, and was admitted to daviess commu- nity hospital on July 3, 2022. a fter two weeks, she had to be placed on ventilator sup- port. Two weeks later she was transferred to a hospi- tal in evansville, for further treatment. although she fought the ill- ness very hard, she reached a point where she was not im- proving and had to be trans- ferred to a long-term care fa- cility for ventilator depen- dent patients. Providence of st. Mary of the Woods, Terre haute, Indiana was chosen. This is where she spent the last of her time on earth with very frequent visits by her husband, children, and other family members. she is survived by her hus- band, James Gladish II; son, Jason Gladish; daughter, Jo- di Gladish; father, rodney Mccandless; mother, Bettye Benjamin; brothers, Mark, chet, and rodger Mccand- less; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. she is proceeded in death by her grandparents, Ken- ny and dolly Mccandless, of Winslow and earl and ruby hays, of Winslow. The family would like to thank the staff at daviess community hospital in Wash- ington for her initial care, and the staff at Providence at st. Mary of the woods in Terre haute for the care they proved over her final months. also, thanks to the staff at Lamb Basham for their ex- cellent service, along with all those who offered support and prayers throughout her illness and passing. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Lamb Basham Me- morial chapel. Burial will fol- low at Walnut hills cemetery, in Petersburg. Visitation was from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Muscular dystrophy association may be made in shililah's memory.
