Reynolds' commitment to the Evansville community is apparent in the journalism that he has led during his more than two decades working in the newsroom in both sports and news, said Mary Irby-Jones, the USA Today Midwest Regional Editor. The 45-year-old Boonville, Indiana, native has been a managing editor, features editor, sports editor and reporter during his 24 years at the Courier & Press. Most recently as news director, he oversaw day-to-day operation of the newsroom. Reynolds has been interim editor since June, when former executive editor Cindi Andrews became senior news director at the Indianapolis Star. Irby-Jones said Reynolds has demonstrated a clear ability to lead the staff and to produce important watchdog and accountability journalism during his time as interim editor. "Ryan's experience and years of excellent journalism in Evansville shows how committed he is to the community and to demanding accountability from local elected and appointed officials who hold positions of power," Irby-Jones said. "I am thrilled to have him at the helm of one of Gannett's most important Indiana newsrooms." As sports editor, from 2017 to 2021, Reynolds led the C&P sports department through an evolution into a team focused on providing the community with enterprising explanatory and investigative coverage of local sports. "I'm proud to have helped lead the Courier & Press newsroom through more than two decades of change," he said. "The industry continues to be over- hauled, but I'm the luckiest person in Evansville: I get to come to work everyday with people who are good at their jobs and whose company I enjoy. Like me, they love this community and want to see it prosper." A graduate of the University of Southern Indiana, Reynolds began his journalism career in spring 1998 as an intern at the Evansville Press. He moved to the Courier & Press later that year as a police reporter when the afternoon newspaper folded. "They still literally pasted together the newspaper in the back shop when I started," he said. One constant through his years at the newspaper has been its evolution from primarily a print product into a digital news outlet focused on providing coverage to the community in all kinds of new ways. "I think we have to continue to differentiate the Courier & Press' journalism from other outlets. We absolutely will cover major breaking news, but we also want to be able to tell a deeper level of story," Reynolds said. "I take pride in the days when our app and website look different from what you'll find in other places. That tells me we're giving our audience something exclusive to the Courier & Press." Married to Amanda, a guidance counselor at North Posey Junior High, they have two sons − Eric, who attends USI, and Alex, who attends Signature School. They live on Evansville's North Side. Reynolds also is an assistant baseball coach at North High School, and volunteered for nearly a decade coaching eighth-grade and freshman baseball at Reitz. "Helping coach high school baseball serves a couple of purposes for me. It's a stress reliever for sure, but it also gives me a chance to help young people find improvement and success," he said. Reynolds is a member of The Turning Pointe United Methodist Church. Previously, he served as PTA president at West Terrace Elementary and president of Golfmoor Baseball Association. He is also a past president of the Indiana chapter of Associated Press Managing Editors. "Some of what we get to do in this job can be light-hearted and fun. But I'm a firm believer in the public's right to know what's going on with their government," Reynolds said. "We will continue to be diligent about public records requests and performing the kind of journalism that allows us to serve as a watchdog for the community." Ryan Reynolds appointed editor of Evansville Courier & Press Reynolds
