Steven Knight's teleplay traces the history of World War II's Special Air Service – or SAS – in "Rogue Heroes," a BBC-sanctioned limited series that makes its American debut Sunday, Nov. 13, on EPIX (after premiering in England in late October). The adaptation of Ben McIntyre's bestseller follows the creation by young military man David Stirling (played by Connor Swindells) of an undercover unit within the British Army, meant to use radical means to upset enemies' plans. Cast members also include Jack O'Connell, Alfie Allen, Sofia Boutella and Dominic West. Director Tom Shankland ("The Serpent," "Les Miserables on Masterpiece") integrates big action sequences into the characters' wittily scripted interactions over the six episodes of "Rogue Heroes." He allows, "It was very challenging, but incredibly enjoyable. With the logistics of putting a thing like this together, even without the restrictions of COVID and the Moroccan government not letting us in, it would still be quite a task. Everyone loved the story, though, and wanted to do a great job with it." Shankland says he was only mildly versed in the SAS before starting "Rogue Heroes": "I've always been interested in World War II and that time in world history, but this particular corner of it, I wasn't really that aware of. I did lots of research, starting with the McIntyre book." Additionally, Shankland met several people with actual SAS connections, and he muses that "my main anxiety was that they'd find out where I live if I did a really bad job." Co-star and "Game of Thrones" alum Allen plays Jock Lewes, one of the "Rogue Heroes," and he confirms having his own fascination with the military. "I was really into making Airfix models of Spitfires and that sort of thing," he recalls, "and as a kid, 'Battle of Britain' was one of my favorite films. When I got this project, I was definitely excited about playing a character like Jock." "I was excited to tell the story of the SAS, because it was a rebellion against the top brass of the military," Allen adds. "Jock was fighting against the mentality of being part of that brass at a future point in his career." With the marketing of "Rogue Heroes" as being from "Peaky Blinders" mastermind Knight, Shankland maintains he has no issue with that positioning, though the war saga clearly is something different. "He's such a great writer, I feel there will be expectations that this will have that kind of tone," reasons Shankland, "but I hope this will be a journey of discovery for (viewers)."
